Aaarghhhh Please Help

memory served wrong. It's a pro2 then..... Don't worry about media seporation, it comes with baskets....

No Worries rabutt. Cheers

I have been reading about Eheim filters and some say they have a priming system. I was wondering what is priming?

I was wondering what is priming?
The ability to draw water into the chambers without you sucking on a hose to syphon water into the canister. A luxury which was not afforded to us olduns in the early days. Yes I've swallowed aquarium water by the bucket load. LOL
Nowdays you have the fancy priming mechanism so you dont have to get your lips wet.

The eheim 2222 is one of the "Pro" series, not the "Pro2" series. It does indeed have separate baskets for media (which is a great feature and they work well) but it does not have a built-in priming plunger as the Pro2 series do. I actually consider this a "plus" of sorts as it is sometimes reported that priming features are among the first thiTngs to cause a filter to need servicing (the flexible bellows crack and break I think.)

There is an accessory you can order from eheim for priming. Its a black rubber squeeze ball with a green cone that nicely fits the eheim tubes and it has a little piece of side air tubing. If you need to prime you simply slip the tubing off your spraybar and give a few suction squeezes with this little ball. The thing is, I've hardly ever needed to use this primer, as usually when I plug the eheim back in it just seems to instantly prime itself and and all is flowing again, so its really only been after a filter clean, and even then seems not much needed.

I also consider the non-thermo versions of the eheim pro & pro2 models to be a better choice than the thermo ones that have built-in heaters. There were too many failures of the thermo sensors when people had any salt in their water. Better to just use a Hydor inline if you want "stealth" heating in your tank.

Cheers BigC and Waterdrop, much appreciated. Its great getting information from people who actually know what they are talking about. I don't trust pet stores sales people, I always feel they want to sell you stuff no matter what. I get the impression they don't care as long as they get a sale. I understand everyone isn't like that, but you can't be sure and its best to go in prepared. Thanks again guys, you have been really helpful.

I need a heater next, has anyone got any suggestions?

I like Hydor in-lines personally, but one member has had a problem recently. That said, problems with them are rare :good: They go in-line removing the heater from the tank, instead putting it into the filter return pipe. They are more efficient watt-for-watt than conventional internals, as they are "active" heaters rather than "passive" ones I.E. cool water is pumped to them for heating rather than relying on convection in the tank...

For an internal heater if you decide against Hydor's, get either a Visitherm or a Fluval Tronic/other electronic based heater. Electronic heaters have little to go wrong with them, and will almost always fail off. By-metallic strips wear out and 9 times out of 10, fail on. That said Visitherms are by-metalic strip, but are the most reliable on the market ATM. I know one person whom runs one that is 30years old.... Many others have them going strong past 10 years also :good:

Looks like I was wrong again. I realised when Waterdrop posted that he had the same one, that it was a Pro model, but thought he ran the Pro 2 range... Pro 1's are the most proven Eheim range after the Classics and should be very solid filters :good:

HTH
Rabbut.

I run a Hydor inline on the output tube of my 2222 and its all been running great, but then again, that's less than a year.
