A Warning/reminder For Summer

my tank temp has always been set at 28C.
i am trying 30C for 3 days now and no problems...yet...

aye if they're used to a higher temp then I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. Depends on the individual fish as well, some species like it hot.

30's just a guideline :)

do you keep discus by any chance?

yup...
got a couple of discus.
my glass catfishes who used to hide behind the 3D background are now at the front of the tank giving me a show.
:good:

It could just be my fish, but a few pieces of ice in a small sandwhich bag floating in their tank is a favorite. They'll brush against the cold, swim to the bottom, then back up again. I haven't found any problems, but then again, it's only a few pieces of ice. So, it wouldn't change the water temp that much. The ice melts before anything can change really. And the fish like it.

I have a 10 gallon and am using A DIY chiller. It keeps my tank well in the safety zone about 74 - 76F. I just fill it with frozen soda bottles aquarium water flows in and cool water comes out.

Unfortunatly my fish aren't liking the hot weather this year. Last year I was lucky enough to not lose a single fish, this week I've already lost 3. All my tanks are in my bedroom, and well overheating. They're at an average of 31 C now. All heaters are unplugged, lights are on at a min. and only 1 out of the 3 per tank. Fans are pointed at the tanks, and the airation is at max. Not much to do now but hope ... and it's only getting warmer over the next days.

Ice cubes or heavily cooled water is not something I will try. It's usually not the hot water that kills the fish, but the change in temperature. Being cool blooded animals they take on the temperature of the enviroment, and dropping from 31C to say 26C (if chilled by icecubbes) is not something that's a good thing. They might like it because obviously the cooler water is much much better than the hot water for them, but if this happens to often (and a 10 minute 'refreshment' a day isn't gonna keep them alive for me) their bodies won't take kindly to it.

With my bedroom temperature being at 33C still (midnight now), and the tank water at 31C ... I'm seriously concidering buying an airco (even though I only spend about 12 weeks a year here)

Hi all

My 125L hit 3O° today! I used big bag of ice & temp went to 27°, fish loved it & it took at least 2+ hours to drop that much! (few bags later!).

I have fans going 24/7 as well. It's been hard on the tanks, but better than being cold. B) for me anyway!

Cheers,

Dave.

I've had temp problems, when I moved into our new place...temporary tank for the fish until I got the big one up and running again....mega-hot room...windows open 24hrs, air pump in, filter near the surface, 4 fas in the room to circulate air and screens to cut the direct sun...and STILL the temp was 29 degrees! THIS IS ENGLAND FOR HEAVENS SAKE! ITS MEANT TO BE COLD AND DREARY! (Looks out of the window) Ahhh. It is. Normal service resumed then...*g* Dread my electricity bill this time...But it's worth it for the fish :D

F&I :B
