Okay, so I have a 55 gallon aquarium, and it's pretty tall. Now considering that I only have a pleco, some catfish and 2 ropefish, I only use about 1/4 of my tank height. Now, what if I get an internal filter, lower the water level to about 5/8 of the way up and then silicone rocks at that level to the glass and each other. At the new water level I'll keep some small salamanders and froggies.

Like this: Lookie!

So the ropefish have room to get air and the salamanders can sit on the rocks on top! Watcha think?

Sounds like a pretty cool idea.

I'm going to buy a 20 gallon tall kit and when I do, I'll start a journal. Thank's for the input though!

Oh yeah it can work, i have seen some excellent diy jobs on tanks.....Have a look at paludarium to get some idea's..
Only thing i will say is what catfish and plec do you have, as do not want to loose space for these guys, but as your thinking along the line of sylicone thats cool, these pics are just for idea's

@ Nelly: I was thinking of siliconing the rocks more around the edges so the fish could have more room. Do you think a dwarf puffer/slamander mix would work?

Woulnt mix in any fish small enough to fit in an amphib/reptiles mouth. Most lizards, salamanders and frogs would eat dwarf puffers, thats is they dont get really nipped by em first.

Crested Geckos are cool! They like cool and wet conditions but wont want to go swimming :)

Are salamnders freshwater or brackish?

@MBOU: I'm really looking for more amphibious critters, but thanks!

I think you will struggle to find amphibion that wont eat the fish or get eaten by the fish, the other problems is quite a few of them have chemicals in there skin that could kill the fish.

Okay then, what about axlotals in the water and red belly newts on land?

What with the fish aswell? i cant see that working and even without not sure how well it would go. How tall is the tank? if there will be a foot+ above the land you might get away with something like a tree from then some type of newt.

No fish, just an axolotl or two in the water and some chinese fire bellied newts on the land.
