A sad story

LOL, I'm worried about presents from relatives... sure, a tank would be a good present, but I can imagine waking up on Xmas morning to find some ancient aunt who I've never heard of has given me a 1g bowls with like 3 goldfish.... Luckilly I doubt that will happen.

when I was young I had some fancy goldfish in a 5G tank.
My little sister thought she'd fill the tank with some water and filled this plastic bottle with water and squirted it in the tank. the bottle formerly contained soap of some sort into

Nobody in my house (all adults) is allowed to touch anything to do with the fish. They are not even allowed to feed them. If I am out at feeding times I leave clear instructions. Yes, I am a bit bossy! :) But it's best for the fish.

Its a Hard Lesson to learn, But they will be better for it. Undestanding now not to touch anything of Daddies Fishy Things.

My Parents and Brothers Dont Touch Any of my Fish Things Since When I firs Started.

I came Home from Work 1 Day and Found that DAD and my Wife had put 2 Adult Angels and Loads of Red Eye Tetras in the Tank.
The Angels ate the smaller Neons and Tetras and It took me Months To catch the RedEye Tetras.

I have a 13 year old son.
He lets me do all the fishy chores, because quite frankly it doesn't appeal to him at all.
We were in WalMart one day right before his birthday and there was an appeal made by me to one of the employees there to tend to a betta that was covered in fungus, shredded fins, etc. - the employee told me they don't treat sick fish, yadda yadda - I stomped over to put the fish back on the shelf and my son said "Mom, I know what I want for my birthday - I want to save that fish. Please?"

So we ended up with what turned out to be a wonderful fish, Jack.

Turns out that a few months later, I thought getting a PUR water filter would be a good idea for my fish tank changes. Well, I ended up killing little Jack with the major PH swing the filter created in the water.

My son was right there in his room with me when I put Jack into the tank - he saw him flip over upside down, and we both watched him die.

It was a great life lesson learned by him - that animals that we have for pets WILL eventually die. It was a horrible thing for me because I had to see this beautiful fish die from my mistake. BUT... I think him watching me do something a bit differently with my fish than I normally do made him realize just how fragile they really are. He's obviously old enough to know better about the whole situation, and I highly doubt he would ever try to do anything with these fish, but this incident sort of cemented the whole idea of him ever making an attempt to do anything with the fish.

What a HORRIBLE scene it must have been at that man's house. How heartbreaking for everyone.

I left my fish in the care of my landlord and lady about a half a year ago when i went on holiday for a 10days, i did a large waterchange in all the tanks and made sure all the equipment was running well and properly and left some instructions for my landlord and lady on how much and what to feed each fish etc.
Well i came back after the holiday only to find the 40 super red guppys i had raised from fry, which were just about to be sold, all dead. It was very gory and they had been rotting in the tank for some days- it turns out that the filter in the tank had broken down and my landlord and lady didn't know what to do, so all the guppys died....
Ever since then i would never trust anyone to look after fish who didn't have an idea of what to do with that kind of situation, i havn't been on holiday since but in the future i'll leave it to fishy friends to look after my fish and not first timers...
