After a break from the aquatic world, I now have two bettas- one in a ten gallon, and one in a five gallon. The ten gallon was already set up with a cave made of rocks, and a glass jar on its side. The five gallon just had a layer of pebbles on the bottom.
I noticed that the betta in the ten gallon liked to hang out in the jar alot. I am guess that although he was ok with swimming around with the current that the filter made, it was nice to have a rest in the jar, which probably has less, if any, of a current.
I put a smaller glass jelly jar in the five gallon tank (along with a plastic plant and some jewel things my sister insisted on) and the betta seems to love it! (After a couple seconds of repeatedly smashing his head into it.
) I have a piece of plastic from a peanut butter jar slowing the flow from the filter, but it still creates a bit of a current, and the jar allows him to rest from it a bit. (I think?)
Not sure if this is an original idea, or if my theory about resting from the current is even true, but if it is, I wanted to pass it on to the rest of you betta lovers.
Of course, this really only applies to tanks with filters and are big enough to accomidate a jar without getting in the way too much.
I don't have any of the ten gallon up right now, but once the camera cooperates, I will post that one as well. Sorry for the fake plant and not going with the natural look- I tried that once, with real plants and everything, and I failed miserbly. Apparently my brown thumb for plants extends to aquatic plants.
Edited to add pic of ten gallon:
This is an old picture of when I still had the platies and danios (obviously) but the set up is still the same- minus the plants, who went the same way as the poor, unfortunate danios.
