A Moral Question

thanks for all the replys, they really help me to decide.

I bought my pleco when it was the size of a dime, and now its getting too big for my 29 gallon so a friend of the families is taking it. I think its ok as long as you know its going to be treated well when it went to a new home.

why not? after factoring in all the costs, i doubt you would make any profit. even if you did, that's called business. you're providing a service for someone who cant wait for the fish to grow out, and therefore , you should be compensated for it.

I personnally do not think it is any more immoral then breeding fish and raising them to sell them. At the end of the day as the long as the fish have been given good homes that is all that should matter. Not whether or not they make a proffit. Take a look at all the different retailers that sell fish, alot of the fish that are in pet shops arent well looked after and are expensive to purchase especially to say that they are in poor condition.

I'd say with the others, the moral obligation is one of making sure the fish has a good home to go to when you run out of room. So it's about research, expertise, contacts- none of which should be a problem in your case. You wouldn't choose an unsuitable (unsellable) species or fail to shift it before the tank was actually creaking at its seams. IMO the moral problem would arise if you failed to provide for the fish; any profit made is immaterial from a moral point of view. Go for it.

What's is immoral is people dumping their fish when it gets too big into local waters. They didn't know or didn't care if their fish will eventually get too big for them. You are at least planning what to do with your fish when it gets too big for you. That sounds like a responsible fishkeeper.

well I did it a few weeks ago, and was dubious about saying anything here,
(there are a few ott members here), but your kind words have given me the conviction to anounce.......

I brought an adonis pleco
Acanthicus adonis not to be confused with a L155

This is a really stunning fish and I just couldn't resist any longer.
still if I win the lottery I will keep him but once he reaches 12" (half adult size)
I'll sell him to a good LFS, one that has a reputation for being a pleco specialist

will do, as soon as he comes out which is not often
