Location
East coast of England.
At 10:30 last night, I left home to go to work (I work nights).
As I drove along the road I live in I saw a small dark shape in the middle of the road which I swerved to avoid. As I passed it I could see that it was a small hedgehog.

Now I live in the middle of a large town it was clear that this urban hedgehog wasn't going to last long if it was in the habit of sitting in the middle of the road.
So I stopped the car and picked up the little chap.

The reason it was in the middle of the road was because someone has dropped a cornetto (ice cream) in the middle of the road and the hedgehog obviously thought that the melted, sticky mess was very tasty!

I carried the little fella back home, found some wood shavings and a box and left him in the capable care of LadyMinion overnight. She provided him with cat food and water and off I went to work.

Eightish hours later at 7:15 I got home from work, retreived the hedgehog from under the sofa where he's gone to sleep after escaping from his box when LadyMinion went to bed, collected his box and headed off in the the countryside to give him a new home away from cars and cornettos.

Here's a photo of the location I chose, a local nature reserve and picnic spot.

What a beautiful English summer morning.

I positioned his box against the undergrowth:

and waited for him to make a bid for freedom...

and waited...

and waited...

I wandered off for a while and took a few other photos.

Here's a grasshopper sunbathing on a thistle:

A baby ladybird doing the same on a nettle:

And an adult ladybird hunting for breakfast on another nettle (look on the otherside of the leaf Mr. Ladybird!)

Eventually my prickly friend makes a move...

Bye Bye Mr. Hedgehog, have a good long life, mate. :byebye:

Thank you for your time.

Aww that was a nice little story. I picked up one once, when it was in the middle of the road. It didn't look injured, stunned maybe? Then I learned you shouldn't do it with your bare hands unless you want an infection. ooops

As long as the prickles don't break the skin, it's not a problem.

But Hedgehogs are always crawling with fleas because they can't scratch very easily, so you have to be careful with that.

I dusted this little chap with flea powder. Blessed relief for him!

awww so cute glad the story had a happy ending. The spikes dont hurt really when you pick hegehogs up!

I was really surprised at how heavy this particular hedgehog was!

Ahhh what a lovely story - and some beautiful pictures for good meassure :D

What a sweet little hedgehog! It's nice to know that there are still some people who realize it is important to keep wild animals in the wild... and not as pets. :kana: Nice pictures too, btw. :)

Yep, as Jen said, it was certainly tempting to keep him as a pet, but it really wouldn't be fair to him at all.

European hedgehogs do not make good pets because if they cannot roam a huge territory they can become overweight and depressed.

A boar hedgehog can walk as much as 10 miles during a night as he tours his domain looking for food, females and fights.

They are also very messy, constantly urinating & defaecating as they walk to mark their territory and because of this are prone to foot-rot in captivity if not kept spotlessly clean- that means several baths a day.

Adult boars also have a bite that contains a type of bacterial 'venom' that causes nerve damage and flesh to become necrotic if not treated with strong antibiotics.

Best leave these hogs in the hedges.

I had to laught when I read this :D

You have to pay around a 100.00 dollars here where I live for a Hedgehog. I cant believe they just walk the streets there. :kewlpics:

THAT'S what a baby ladybird looks like? Seriously?
