Hiya Peeps,

I have a small redundant tank, about 18" long similar to this and was contemplating turning into a marine tank.

Firstly would this be possible? And if it was, what equipment would i need to get going?

I know i would only be able to have 1 or 2 fish in it, and i would like some live rock, but again i'm not sure if all these pipe dreams are possible!

Anyone care to advise me on this one??!!

Thanks in advance

That tank is going to be under 10g and therefore you will need to know and understand a lot about water husbandry and the whole saltwater hobby. The less tank volume the easier and faster you can make mistakes and even a simple mistake like a death in the tank will wipe it out.

IMO I would buy a bigger tank - 75g is a perfect size for a beginner but understandably this is not always practical. Get the biggest you can and try to stay out of Nano territory until you are confident of the hobby. Nano tanks are 30g or less so anything larger than that will be fine, the more water volume means more dilution if you have a problem.

Depending on the tank size and what you want to keep you will need heater, powerheads, live rock, lights and possibly a skimmer. This is not a cheap hobby and the running costs are quite big too. You'll need test kits, salt, RO water, Different foods and a refractometer.

Hope this hasn't put you off but if you want to make your dreams come true it's going to cost you :p
