This guy I found in the paper wants to get rid of his 55g marine setup. He says he isn't around much anymore to take care of them so he has to get rid of it. He offered it to me for $95.00. It has all you need for a marine tank plus two fish, a yellow tang and a maroon clown. Is that a good deal? and will the fish survive an hour long trip in a big bag or should i toss them into a small bucket with a top?

A good deal :kana:
However the tang really is going to need larger space thanthis tobe honest. (100 gallons minimum). Fish can be transported via bags but keep them seperate as they can damage each other if kept in teh same water. Iwould not place them in a bucket as this might cause stress and they againcould damage each other (considering the weapons the tang has i would not like this idea). Considering that fish are transported all over the workd in plastic bags im sure they will survive an hours drive in a canr. I would snap the tank up as it seems a great bargain.
Is it a reef setup? if not then ask if he has ever had whitespot in his tank and if so then how did he treat it? if he used a copper based medicatin then think long and hard over its purchase as this means you will have little chance of housing inverts without alot of hard work.

Good luck

Well, It sounds like a partial reef tank. He has a bit of it with coral and rocks and the other half is just open becuase he never got around to coraling it. Well would you think PetCo would trade me the tang for some shrimp or hermits and some blue damsels?

I dont know much about the shops in the USA but most shops in the Uk will usually trade. Be careful with damsels though, they are (or can be) extremely aggressive (they aint called devil fish for nothing ;) ).

If it has corals then its a bargain! This also means the tnk has never been treated with copper and thus you can keep inverts. It also means that if he has corals growing already then his lights are obviously good enough to keep them alive and the lights are one of the more expensive parts when trying to maintaina reef setup rather than a fish only setup.

yea, I'm going to call the guy back tommarow and pick up the tank on saturday or sunday.

I was looking around at the different kinds of corals and mushroom polyps, I think from what the guy describes, the lights have been replaced last year and are still in awesome condition. So what are some pretty low, medium-low things I could do?
