Forgive me about not being up to speed but what happened to the fish that was in this one?, did it end up empty during the big switch around?

Were you able to "seed" the filter on this one?

I was treating them for whitespot, and after 3 weeks of treatment they started dropping like flys so rather than see the rest suffer. I kulled them as they were showing signs of fitting, floating upside down and shimmying upside down. decided it was less cruel to stop their suffering. The filter is the same media, with new carbon cartridges, but the ammonia levels arn't dropping so i guess the bacteria died off overnight while it was empty as didnt have dechlorinator to refill the tank until 12hours after the empty.
so starting again. All the lfs in the area have whitespot problems with their platys so I guess they are prone to it. rethinking the stocking when its cycled although I do love sunset platys don't know if I could go through loosing another lot. its too upsetting

If your LFS have a whitespot problem, wait until they get it taken care of before getting any fish from them. It has nothing to do with the fish being weak and everything to do with the parasite being present in the tank. I am hesitant to believe that ich is really your problem. If you catch it and treat right away, it is quickly cured and seldom takes very many fish. Losing a whole tank to it is very unusual. Next time you think you have an ich problem, please post clear pictures in the tropical emergencies area and let the people there help you diagnose the problem. Some of the fungus type infections do produce some white spots on the fish and a person new to fish might misinterpret what they are seeing.

OK OM47 thanks. They all had a few spots, a greyish tinge to them, stringy invisible poo intermittant with white/black/brown/pink poops. flicking to the point of looking like epilepsy. contant flicking, shimmying, swimming backwards, hiding, frightened hiding too, spitting out food, even though really hungrey, no grwoths, no fluffiness, loss of colour in some instances....even when they looked bettr, they were still shimmying, and flicking....and when the temp is 30-31 calcius, and salt (itsp per gallon) is added with the treatment 1ml per gallon, for 3 weeks, surely after loosing 12 adults and 15 babys i just didn't want to see any more suffering. they looked great until the day I kulled them, as they started flicking really badly, to the point of jumping out of the water. and the levels were kept at 0 with daily water changes. I even removed all ornaments to leave less area for trophants to land and reattach. I don't know what else I could have done

Thanks guys. I hope to be less impatient this time as I already have beautiful fish in my other tanks. so we'll see how quick/slow this one goes
ok
ammonia 4ppm

this morning,
ammonia 2ppm, nitrite 1ppm, nitrate 10ppm....and we're off!here we go again .....

So did you use some "squeezings" from any of your other filters to speed things up?, and what are your plans for it when it's done?

this filter was part way through a cycling anyway, but i think I killed off the bacteria when i left it empty for 24 hours. no ,did use media from other tanks, only one is fully cycled and I didn't want to have to part cycle it again
as for plans for the tank , I'm still thinking what to do, there's so much choice. I love platys, but I havn't had much luck with them so far, so I am contemplating maybe 2 female platys, or 2 red rainbows with rosy barbs, as I liked the look of a large group. but there are so many fish I like I shall have to give it some major thought.

It looks like you still had something alive in that filter Jayne. I just read your description of the symptoms and it certainly does not sound like ich to me. When it comes to dealing with disease in our tanks, proper diagnosis is the key to quick effective treatment. A clear picture along with a detailed description is sometimes all it will take for someone in the emergencies section to put you on the right path for a cure.

how can that be OM47, as they had ALL the symptoms for Ich according to my aquarists book....if not Ich what?
I'm hoping the bacs will colonize quickly but we'll see, the nitrite bacs seem to be coping well and the ammonia bacs need to catch up! lol

Ich takes on the look of salt crystals as you might see on a serving of chips. It does not have the look of a coating on the fish at all. The grayish tinge and stringy waste sounds more like some kind of internal parasite combined with perhaps something like a fungus on the outside. I am far from an expert in fish diseases but, like most fish keepers, I have dealt with ich from time to time. Ich usually looks like a light sprinkling of rather large grains of salt and is found in very distinct individual markings, not a more general coloring on the fins or body.
