Also posted in the oscar section, but I haven't been getting any responses.

I am setting up a pond that is 3 feet deep and 5 feet across (its a circular pond). From my rough math, I think thats about 860 gallons, but feel free to correct me because math certainly isn't my strong point!

I am in north Florida, about 100 miles north of the freeze line. It dosen't get very cold very often here, but once or twice in the winter, it does get pretty cold. It would be easy enough to put a piece of plywood over the pond for the nights it gets really cold- would that keep the fish warm enough? (Seems silly to me, but thats what someone suggested...) There is a greenhouse where I could set up a temporary tank for them when it was going to get really cold, but the greenhouse isn't heated- it would just keep the wind off of them, basically.

I would love to have a pond of oscars, and a sailfin pleco. Maybe other fish, but oscars are my first choice.

I know oscars sometimes (usually?) fight, but I think I remember reading a thread about a pond that was stocked with oscars, and seemed to do ok. Could I stock with oscars? If so, how many? It would be cool to have one of each color type. :hyper:

I am planning for the pond to be airiated (sp?) but not filtered- not sure if that would work, especially with messy fish like oscars and plecos. I am also planning to do one water change a month, changing half of the water each time. Its a long story, but water changes will be a PITA and I cannot do them more often than that. (Stupid sulfur water- I will have to shut the water off and change the head of the water fountain to connect a hose, and all that.) I am going to put sand on the bottom, and add rocks to make it more interesting.

Would this work? With reading around, right now I am thinking of about 6-7 oscars to spread aggression, and one sailfin pleco, but would I be ok without a filter?

Suggestions are appreciated, and a reality check would be accepted if one is in order.

Not too sure about this idea especially no filtration,If you can keep the pond at the right temperature and filter it well then perhaps. What do others think? :/

This is my first time considering a pond, so this is all new to me. If this wouldn't work, feel free to suggest what changes I need, such as filtering being neccesary, or heating. I'm open to all ideas and I accept that my plan is far from perfect and might need changes. :good:

How complicated would filtering be? I don't know how I would run power to where I wanted it. Wait, that messes up airiating it, too... I think I could get power to it. But how would I set up filtering?

Go down to your lfs or garden centre and see what filters they have- once you've worked out how many gallons the pond is going to be, they should be able to tell you how to set up the filtration- it isn't complicated to set up filtration for a pond, but there are quite a few different types of filters/pumps you could opt for in your pond.
If the temp falls below 22 degree's in the pond i would strongly advise heating it as oscars are really tropical fish and temps too cold will be bad for their health, the only issue with this is that heating can be quite expensive to run for ponds.

you can certainly make tropical ponds if your climate will allow, and oscars would be fine in a tropical pond. you'd need at least 6 or they'd tear each other apart, maybe 7/8 would be better. you absolutely do need filtration with such high waste fish.

the main issue i can see is heating, are you really sure you could keep up an ambient temp of 24-26oC even when the weather's really bad. bear in mind O's can live 10 years + so there's plenty of opportunity for a really cold winter

I'm not sure on temperature problems but pond filteration isn't lots of money when compared to an external filter, also don't they make huge 1kw pond heaters? that might be on all winter - could cost a lot to run
