I pick up my new tank tank tomorrow and didn't even think about the weight difference. Has anybody else got a 65gal in there bedroom? Ive managed to work out that it will span between 3 floor joists do you think i will be ok ?

Ha! I think it depends what your floors are made of ect.

My Dad had a mini strop about my 60 LITRE!

Thats going to be risky. I wouldnt go above 40G upstairs personally. By the time you fill it with water+any substrate and ornaments and the weight of the tank and stand itself that will weigh a fair amount.

It's hard for people to give you a precise answer as we don't know anything about your floors and supports.

I do personally have a 55G in the bedroom of my house though and that's a 150 year old house with floorboards seeming made of cheese. Every step has a ripple effect on the tank... but needs must and all that. The load is spread on mine with a 'floor' to the cabinet, the full length of the tank.

i mean the house is only 20 years old and i worked out that its going to weigh about 350kg which is live having 3 of me stood there constantly. would it be better to put it on the out side wall and get some heavy duty brackets from work (take upto 360kg each) and use them to take some of the strain as well. Really is has to go up stairs if not ill have to sell before ive started.

i wouldn't worry about it i've got a 55 gallon and a 20 gallon both upstairs and along the same wall, if you can place them near where the joists go into the wall it would be better.
i remember when i first thought about having a tank upstairs i had the same worry ,i read this article and stopped worrying about it.

I've got a 55 gal and a 15 gal side by side upstairs with no extra support whatsoever. So based on that, you should be okay but it might be worth getting in touch with the right people and finding out!

James.

It could be worse, you could have dreams of setting up a 5x2x2 (~540l) tank in a first floor maisonette, which would probably weigh in at close to 750Kg when all ready to go over at least four joists!

However, even I knew setting up Nelly's old tank (bought by someone new on here along with some of Nelly's old stock including the Oscars and the giant Silver Dollar) would be a huge risk, not to mention a nightmare to even carry upstairs!

If we have not found somewhere new to live by autumn, ideally a bungalow but definitely ground floor, I can see myself fully setting up the tank in the garage, where it currently sits on top of the home-made stand. We have spare computer desks down there, so I could almost picture myself on my puter with a view of my fish, wrapped up in several blankets trying to keep warm in the middle of winter!!

lol well its here now and looks great. I should have just asked my dad in the first place as he is a builder lol, he said i might as well keep both tanks running up here! so at least i can do a proper cycle of the new 1 before the old one goes
