hi! i have a spare 5gallon (16*8*10) tank that is cycling now and i was wondering what would be good fish to put given that i'm in a tropical country and the water flow is a bit strong (200-300 l/h). it has an internal filter by haiyang (powerhead + sponge cartridge). oh and it's bare as of the moment, no substrate.

A betta with some bottom feeders such as shrimp or snails.

A few African Dwarf Frogs, with a betta.

3 Cherry Barbs and a shrimp.

As the tank is quite small it is limited to ideas. So best of luck though!

im not keen on putting my bettas there since i have 2 already lol

im looking for the most diverse though. and those that can withstand strong current.

i dont mind overstocking since it has a high flow rate and im a regular water changer :)

I may get shot down in flames here but possibly a single dwarf puffer. Tank is a bit on small side though so I'm not sure, but they can only really be kept in a species tank which it would be. Check out the oddballs forum for more info.

:good:

Some more ideas....(each line is a stocking suggestion in itself)

3 Male guppies

4 Neon Tetras

A Dwarf Gourami by himself with either snail or shrimps.

I think a few members may have overlooked something with their stocking surgestions.

A 5gallon tank is rughly equil to 25litres
the filter flow rate is 200-300 litres per hour.
the tank turnover rate is beween 8 and 12 times an hour.
This means that there in a very strong current in the tank. IMO, the current is far too strong for Fighters, male guppies, cherry barbs or goramis, that origionate from areas with little water flow. Their large tails or bodies mean they have a lot of drag, and will realy have to work to swim against the current. They will not feel to comfortable in these conditions.
The tank is also too small for neons, that require a large amount of swimming space to feel comfortable.
I might surgest White Cloud Mountain River Minows. They naturaly origionate from the rivers source tributarites, thus realy like the strong current. They will also appreciate the high oxygenation leavles that the tank will have, if a venturi (airator) kit is fited to the filter. Place a few rocks at the botom for them to retreat to at night, and so they may rest occasionaly, and they will do well in the tanks conditions IMO.

While I agree that the flow rate may be too strong for some of the fish mentioned (can it be adjusted any), is the tank not also too small for WCMM as they need lots of swimming room?

Guppys are a good choice for a tank thats size, except they may breed like crazy. dwarf frogs are also pretty neat if you want to go more towards amphibians, and not just fish. Any small tetra like neons or cardinals are a good choice. Also the cherry barbs would fit fine in a five gallon. i would not keep a tiger barb or a chincese algae in there though. they are both medium sized fish that are territorial.

Would have thought the swiming space is on the verge of being too small, but not too bad, so long as there is not too many ornamants or plants in the top half, or front of the tank, as this will be where they will spend the most of their time.

I wouldn't go with the Minnows as the tank isn't big enough. They are an active fish and would do better in a 10G+.
