i'm planning to set up a 55G aquarium beside my other community tank. are there any advantages to staying within a genus or a species with cichlids (i like the appearance of pesudotropheus myself) how compatible are these with each other? are there other colour variations out there?

the tank itself is going to be 12" wide by 18" deep by 48" long. i know i'll be limited as to what i can do rock wise but this is as large as i can go. planning to only keep a few species.

A tank of 3 or 4 species with 1m-3f will work with most species just get fish which look different as there is less chance of cross breeding and less aggression from 2 males that look similar.

The demasoni needs to be either a single male or at least 12 of them as they can be very aggressive.
