You can have 5 Discus in a 55 with others, but I would make it a bare bottom tank to keep it as clean as possible. Young Discus especially need very clean tanks and lots of water changes to reach their potential, 50% wc twice per week minimum I'd say.

I am up for the water changes but would really prefer substrate for the plants and other fish.

you can have plants and substrate with no worries, use sand as everything stays on top and you can syphon off easily

I was actually thinking of having the same substrate mix as you.

its possible to keep a group of younger discus but before too long they get stunted from lacking swimming space. Most often used as growing out tanks, plus you kinda will loose the schooling of the fish and a huge amount of agression will be displayed towards the runt of the group.

Hi mine is a 55 us gal, 48x15x18", discus are best with min 18" ht as they grow tall.

So the final stock could be something like: 5 discus, 4 corys, 2 small plecos (or bristlnose?), 25 cardinal tetras, and 10 rummy nose tetras.

I would pull the bristlenoses and put 3 botias in. Just have a little worry they might find the discus' mucus a little yummy during the middle of the night

Yeah well it was just a thought. I saw freerunner416's tank and he has some of these living together. Could i do something like his tank?
