55, yo

Calcium buildup is easily removed by scrubbing, even with an aquarium sponge, and warm water. No biggie.

Filtration wise- you only want to keep this ONE fish right? (make sure you move all your cycled media over so he doesnt suffer). I agree an AC500 is fine. Just pack it with three sponges instead of bothering with the carbon (theirs is crudd). You might wanna look into the new biomax inserts for the top layer. In any event. ONE fish. No biggie. he'll be very pleased. You have numerous alternatives. I say don't bother canister filtering unless you are going to put way more fish in there.

Currently I use an Emperor 400 from Marineland on a 55 Gallon. It was on sale though. GIven the choice I'd be running 2 Aquaclear 300's. 2 for the redundancy- if you lose one to motor failure etc you still have a filter going. Also Aquaclears have longer media/water contact time... And Biowheels are so over rated.

but if you would put a big 6 pound on the glass, wouldn't it break or crack the glass?

Not at all. I have more than 250 lbs of granite in my 75g tank.

If you're worried about the glass, stop by your local big hardware store and pick up some electrical eggcrate. Looks like this:

Cut it to size and place it on the bottom of the tank. Dispurses the weight of the rocks over the whole bottom.

I'd definitely pick sand. Mbuna love it. Pool filter or sand blasting sand is a good size. Cleaner than play sand too.
