What would work best for stocking my 55 gallon aquarium with cichlids? I have never had cichlids before, except for one angel fish. I have no idea what fish can go with what. I am interested in cichlids, and would love to have them, but at this point I have no idea what can go in a 55 gal. and what is compatible.

Thanks!

well answer some of these questions and it can narrow down your options

1, would you like 1 large fish or 2 or more medium sized fish

2, do you want to breed anything imparticular

3, do you want other tankmates with it.

I may want other tankmates with it if that would work. 1 large, or two or more medium sized fish would work too. I am not interested in breeding at the moment.

You could have 1 severum, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 Acara. Just three I could think of off the top of my head.

I would suggest a pair of firemouths, convicts, or kribs but your not interested in the fry that follow them.
Firemouths are pretty peaceful and could go with barbs or large tetras.
Convicts are okay except when breeding. Then they become monsters.
Kribs are pretty close to convicts in certain ways but less aggressive.

ok so you could get

a Gt or a Blue acara or a firemouth or a convict, or a blood parrot, or a jack dempsey, or a severum (there maybe more just all i can think of atm)

personally i would have a pair of jack dempseys. they may breed but you dont have to do anything with the fry. just let the JDs eat them. in that tank you could have dither fish( fish that are fast and let the fish know its ok to come out) you oculd have danios, tetras you choode then maybe a bristlenose catfish.

anyhow, research the fish i have listed and see which one you like the best.

I like firemouths so that is a good idea. But I also like Rams. What could I have with Rams?

Rams are peaceful community fish and go with just about any community fish.

Yes, rams can go nicely with angels.

My tank is a 46, not a 55, but I have a good angel community going on, see signature for fish list. The guppies are in there to provide fry (nice live food source) for my angels, rams and black ghost knife. I am having a hard time getting guppies that survive quarrantine - they've been a bit overbred and can be delicate. My LFS sells "feeder guppies" that are nowhere near as colorful, but may be stronger fish - I'm going to ask next time I'm there.

With angels, stay away from tiger barbs, serpae tetras or any other nippy fish.

I love black ghost knife fish! So yours has no problems with being with the other fish? Do you think a red tailed shark and some yoyo loaches would also go nicely? I am thinking about having angels and rams for cichlids.

No, my BGK has no problem with the other fish. He's still pretty small, only about 3", and is very submissive to the other fish - to the point that I have to spot feed him with some sinking pellets to make sure he's eating. He's got plenty of hiding places and is getting bolder about coming out even when the lights are on.

I would advise against the red tail shark, they can turn into lunatics as they get bigger and decimate your smaller fish.

Yo Yo loaches would be a great addition :)

Thanks :)

ok so how bout this:

2 Rams
Angel (umm I dont know how many here)
4 yoyo loaches
1 bgk
1 bristlenosed pleco
What else would go with these tank mates?

Thanks :)

ok, i wouldnt bother getting a bgk, they can reach 18" and really need 5x2x2 min.

So i would do something like this

2 Rams
6 Baby angels (let 2 pair of then return the other 4)
6 Yoyo Loaches
1 Bristlenose Plec
6 Tetras or Danios. theres thousands of tetras so see what your lfs has then research them here.

Good luck
