50 Gal Tank Newbie

Hi there. I used to have a 30 gal tank, but had to get rid of it for many reasons.

Now, My hubby and I found a 50 gal tank and stand for a great price!

We have bought some fish for it, and have already lost some of them, just trying it out to see which kind work together from what we like. Not sure why some died, but we think they were the weaker of the bunch and were attacked. Missing eyes seem give us a good guess about that.

We have 2 Gold Gourami, 4 Platies, 2 Small Plecos, 1 Marble Angel, 1 White Blushing Angel, 2 Bala Sharks, 3 Cherry Barbs (lost 2) , 3 neon Tetras (lost 2), 5 Bloodfin Tetras, 2 Tiger Barbs (lost 1), 2 Rosy Barbs, 2 Giant Danios, 1 Serpae Tetra (lost 1), 2 Black Tetras.

We also are trying out a couple live plants. Some are growing, 2 are floating. I think the 2 flosting ones are lilies, are they supposed to float?

I think two of my Platies are pregnant. One is a Mickey Mouse Platy, and the other is orange. The orange one keeps hifding in the rocks under a coral. And I am not sureif my Bloodfin Tetra is going to lay eggs, it looks really fat.

What do you mean? I've never heard of "cycling" a tank?

cycling is the process of building up a colony of bacteria which convert harmful wastes produced by fish into less toxic substances, see:

Yeah i was gonna say, if you lose neons something must be wrong as neons are incredibly tough.

I know that I lost one neon. When I added them to the tank, one was swimming funny, then he disappeared. I don't know if I am missing more. I only bought 6, and I can only find 3, but I may be miss counting. The Barbs are what I seem to be losing the fastest.

I tried getting the ammonia test thing at Wal-Mart, but they didn't have it. Will try the LFS tomorrow.
