5 Dead Today

the poop is white and stringy, it has been for a while. What does this mean?

Also is the ammonia test result not in there? whats the symbol for it? I asked them to do these tests and they gave me the five results for nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, ph & water hardness

and the fish i found out were danio's i think, they had them at the lfs but in a different colour

I believe the symbol/formula for ammonia is NH3, i don't think you have the test result for it. Yellow is a rather unusual colour for danios, i think the only danios that i can think of that have any yellow colouring are hikari danios;

Found 5 more dead fish just now, 1 silver/white molly, 2 guppies and a danio and a cardinal tetra. Wats going on in my tank? have noticed that tails and fins are not in the best condition, is this due to the barbs?

The white stringy poop is a classic symptom of internal bacteria and is a pretty common desease in common livebearers like guppys, mollys, swordtails etc.

Are the barbs showing any agression towards the other fish? I would watch them for at least 15mins and watch their behavior towards the other fish, if they aren't responsable for the tattered fins, then the fin damage is most likely finrot.

For treating the internal bacteria, "anti internal bacteria" by Interpet is a very good med for it, and if your fish have finrot, then Pimafix is good at treating this.

Oh ok, im back off to the lfs now, will get the anti internal bacteria and also the pimafix, not forgetting the nh3 test. Cheers mate, dont know how many fish i iwll have left at this rate, ive lost 15 in 2 days, i think a silver gourami is on its way 2, just sitting at the bottom of the tank and breathing, not swimming at all. Cj

ive got the anti internal bacteria, just reading the instructions now. The NH3 Result was 0, the guy seemed a bit of a twit so ive bought a mini testing kit, made by nutrafin, going to do the ammonia test myself.

Could the fish be dying because of the internal bacteria infection?

Yes internal bacteria can be pretty lethal and infectious if left untreated, it can cause a whole range of symptoms in fish, but white/stringy poop is a very common symptom of internal bacteria. I would also check out the fin damage on the fish, as that could be finrot.

yep mate, there the ones, got only 3 of them left now.

I did the ammonia check myself and it was 0. So if all these figures are ok, it mustve been the internal bacteria infection im guessing. How soon will that clear up? will i loose anymore fish do you think, ive added it today and the next dose will be on wednesday.

I've had a lot of success with the interpet treatments in the past, so it should sort the problem out. I'd also advise getting something like Pimafix to help sort the fishes damaged fins out too (as finrot left untreated can also be lethal). If you need to do any water changes during the treatments, just remember to top up any of the meds lost by the water changes :good: .

thanks for all you help mate, really well appreciated, if only i took action earlier, i could have saved the 15 that i have lost

Glad to help, yes catching and treating deseases/parasites early on is important and the key to saving as many fish as posible, but now you know what to look out for so you can help prevent things like this happening again in the future  .

found 6 more fish dead today, i think they 5 of them being tetra's ahave been dead a while, and 1 female swordtail died today. I think there is fin rot, can i add that treatment whilst im treating with the anti internal bacterial? Also on a seperate issue, when can i add new fish, when the fish stop dying or when they look healthier? How often am i meant to feed them, ive read tha u can feed them a few times a day. The women at 1 lfs said once every 4 days!

Check the anus of the fish to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed.
Any fish that look skinny.

Just a word about the dechlorinator. Tetra AquaSafe is absolutely fine. Only add the dechlorinator to the amount of fresh water you're adding to the tank. Sorry about your losses; you're not the first person to get bad advice from a shop and you certainly won't be the last. You've learned the hard way about researching as much as possible about the fish you want to keep. Don't lose heart; when this has been sorted, just try to stand back a bit and have a good think about the future of your tank and it's inhabitants; what kind of community you want it to be, how the different fish will get along. If you have to take some back to the shop and start again, so be it. It's happened to all of us to some extent, it's called experience. Tokis has given you two very good options for stocking; either one has just about the perfect balance of different fish and good-sized shoals. If you follow either of them, you'll have a tank of fish that behave like fish should. Good luck.
