48 Gallon Salt Water

 Im think about turn my 48 gallon tank to salt. What would I need to do so. I will be doing a fish-only typ. I think try for reef would get get over my head.
 
 Does a sump tank have to be under the main tank? I would put it under my affican cilid tank. Its right by the 48 gallon tank.

I've never done a sump myself, but I've seen examples of them being placed in spots other than underneath the tank. For example, I used to leave near a shop that had a row of small displays rigged up to a gigantic sump in a totally different room (pipes went through the wall in that case).
