Okay... so originally I was going to start my 40gallon tank as a brackish water tank, but now I'm thinking of going in the opposite direction and go saltwater instead... okay so not so much opposite direction as furthur into the salty waters direction... Now, I'm curious to know what kind of fish should I put in the tank? I want some gobies of some sort, mabye a clownfish even, but do clownfish need coral to be happy? cuz I want a fish only tank........ ARGH!!! somebody please help me?!

Ok, clown fish do not need any coral to be happy. As for gobies, i would recommend a clown goby because they are easy to keep. You can do alot with a 40 gallon tank. You can look into one pygmy angel because they are very hardy and IMO a good starter fish once everything is ok in the tank. Also a 6 line wrasse is an awesome fish! Good luck

Man, Six Lined Wrasses must be the greatest fish in the universe or something... everyone has one!

PRW1988, the list wflash mentions is fine, but if your tank is going to be fish-only, why not elaborate? Get some semi-mean fish such as a medium-sized Halichoeres or Thalassoma. Dwarf lionfishes and scorpionfishes are also an option, as are frogfish. Go nuts, in fact! You could keep a small number of 4''-6'' fish in your tank and an assortment of 'mean' invertebrates such as a small lobster, and a few animals that would otherwise munch coral, such as the beautiful cowries (Cyprea). No need to be restrained by any "reef-safe guidelines" here.

I am not completely convinced of this tbh, I would say that Clowns are better off with some form of host be it an Anemone or a Coral

But in saying that I would not advocate getting an Anemone for a new setup, maybe soem sort of Soft coral

This is based on no scientific evidence but more reasearch on marine forums

Agreed. Clownfishes evolved over millions of years to be symbionts to anemones and coral. There is no way that that can all be reversed in a few days with no side effects. It'd be like dropping a Sei Whale in the Nile river and expecting it to survive as good as a hippo.
