Will that work? I currently have 4 female bettas right now and a red tail shark, my RTS doesn't really bother my bettas even tho it got bigger than the bettas now, one of my betta used to chase my red tail when it was smaller, I was thinking of adding 3 swordtails in my tank, will things turn out OK? Does anybody had luck with this mix?
Thnx in advance.

I would not add 3 swordtails to a 20 gallon tank with a RTS and a colony of female bettas in it. Swordtails need lots of swimming room and are very energetic fish while bettas certainly are not energetic fish. If you have more than one male in a tank that size you will have aggression problems with the swords. The RTS will eventually become a problem for your bettas, they are quite aggressive fish in general as they get larger and will get way too big for a 20 gallon.

Agree with oldman here.

The RTS will become problematic, it will grow too large for the tank at around 6" but as it matures the sharks aggression will also increase.

Red tailed sharks claim large areas of your tank as their own territory and will start to attack any fish that come close. To minimise this aggression RTS should not be kept in tanks smaller than 55 gal.

Everything may seem ok at the moment, but as soon as the shark hits maturity it will change, have a search around on this forum, there have been planty of threads in the past where people have found this out the hard way.

I think I'll just add the fishes when I upgrade to a bigger tank, I was thinking 40g, but now I think I'll consider 55g

If it gets too chaotic in the tank I might have to seperate a few, my RTS is 2 1/2 inches right now and bettas are like 1 1/2 The RTS only chase them now on feeding time, that's it. So I kinda hand feed my bettas first to make sure their fed and feed the RTS later. My 3 inch SA Bumblebeecat and two 2 inch young pictus catfish comes out at night. None of my fishes mess with my cats. Maybe Im just gonna have to put the swordtails, Pictus and RTS to the bigger tank.

Didn't know that swordtails are very energetic, thats kewl, thanx for the info, My bettas can jump 3-4 inches above surface of the water, it was trying to get the food from my finger, didnt know they can do that.

Thnx for the help :) Andy, Kelly N Oldman
