Got my betta tank all set up! Ditched the old tall tank and got myself a new, longer 5.5 gallon instead.  Much easier to sort! So anyway, I want to keep that as it is, and then look at getting another.  I used to have a 55 gallon, but I can't manage another one of those, so one that's a little smaller will have to do !

I'm thinking something along the lines of...

12-15 small shoaling tetras (rummies or cardinals probably)
A pair of either dwarf or honey gouramis
6-8 Kuhli loaches
6-8 panda cories or 6-8 zebra loaches
1 bristlenose or 3 ottos

Does that sound about right?

Otherwise, alternatively I considered perhaps having a microrasbora type tank, with a larger number of the smaller species.  I think I would keep my bottom feeders the same, but if I was going for the smaller species, I certainly wouldn't have the zebras!

20-25 chilli rasboras
3 honey gouramis
And bottom feeders..

Am I thinking along the right sort of lines here? Just as a guide?

sounds good to me, would love to see a pic of now and when its done :O

Perfect! :) Hopefully get one in the next 2 or 3 months and get it set up by Christmas! Will post photos for sure :)

Is your water hard or soft?

What are the dimensions of the tank you're thinking of?

My water is rather hard, but I never had any issues keeping all of those fish (bar the microrasboras which I have not kept before) in that hardness.

pH is fairly neutral.

And oops, my mistake...I was basing volume on the incorrect dimensions, so it actually around 30 gallons (112 litres).  Serves me right for looking at it late at night!!
