3 Pearls Always Hiding

i bought 3 pearls to be my centre piece fish 2 months back and all they do is hide behind my amazon swords at the back of the tank

have i just got shy pearls or is something wrong? i never see them only when feeding, nothing else big in my tank and its wuite heavily planted, kept two of these a few years back and they were lovely occupied the upper middle of the tank

thinking about taking them back and getting something else (although theyre lovely, 2 males and female) as i want to achieve an amazon biotope

It isn't natural behaviour and they sound stressed out.
what is the water quality like, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate & PH?
how often do you do water changes/ gravel cleans and how much water do you change?
do you use straight tap water to refill the tank or is it dechlorinated first?
what other fish are in the tank?
does the tank have a picture on the back?

the water stats are perfect,

thought it was two females and one male then he developed his extended fins and red throat, they dont fight or anything just hide its weird, really scared of me whenever i go next to the tank

It could be the fish don't see enough people or have enough movement around them and this is causing them to panic and get spooked whenever you go near the tank. If there aren't many people moving around the tank try having the television on during the day when you are out. You don't need the volume on just the picture. The light and movement on the tv should help settle them down. You can also use a fan with some pieces of ribbon on the fan cage. The wind from the fan will blow the ribbon and cause it to wave about and this might help settle them. Alternatively move the tank to an area where more people move past it. The lounge room is pretty good for this.
