Hi people well ive got a 20gal tank and i want to put 3 female Guppy (Normal or Endlers) and 1 male with 3 Female Platy and 1 male platy. Also lots of cover for fry (fake or real which one should i use? as i want to breed them naturally i dont know if i should take out 1 female Guppy and 1 Female Platy what do u think? I also need sometihng to clean the algea and ideas? Snails?? Cory?? what would be better?? Thanks!

Your stocking is ok to start out, but you as you will be breeding them you could get overstocked quickly. Do you have another tank to put fry in, or a fish store that will take any you don't want?

You should check out the beginners resource pinned topic in the freshwater tank section of the forum. From the sounds of you will need to cycle the tank before putting fish in, they discuss this and many other things in beginners resource.

To be honest you don't actually need to have something to eat algae, with a new tank you won't have anything to eat, and most algae can be wiped off the glass very easily.

Oh, and about plants, lighting is more of a factor about deciding plants. If you can tell us your what kind of lighting you have (i.e. wattage) we'll be able to help you figure out if you can grow plants.

Welcome to the forum Roadsy.
As NinjaSmurf said, unless you have an outlet for your breeding results, you will quickly find yourself with a crowded tank. I have a guppy tank running that gets no fry care except that I feed the tank. I take a net full of adults out of it every month or two and sell them on to other hobbyists at various auctions. That tank still always looks crowded to me although it is a bit better right after I sell most of the adults. It does keep my colony young and vital by removing the adults regularly though.

Unless you have a bigger tank you're going to set up, I would NOT breed guppies and platy in the same tank. Take it from me. I had tried to do so and all my became ill due to overcrowding and most of them died. My tank was only 1/2 the size of yours, but still, once your fish begin breeding water volume to fish will be comparable to the number I had!

For algae (which I have a problem with in two of my tanks) I just wipe the inside down with a sponge every time I do a water change. Snails make a ton of waste and will contribute to what could possibly become poor water quality. I *do* have a microscopic pet snail in a .50 gallon vase. The snail was on a plant I brought home and I decided to keep it. When I clean the little vase, tons of strings of poo pours out of the vase!

Ok sorry i can only go on, on Mon-Fri but not thursday

Ok firstly thx for the info.

Ive another 20 gal tank and a 100gal i can only use the other 20 but i dont want to... Ive also got someone who said he will buy as many as possible from me :p
Can i just use spawn mops to give fry cover or real ones if real do i need to buy a 50watt light or more?? Would Java Moss be good at the bottom or dont worry?

Going to cycle tank in a week so i can get all the info i need

Also whats the best way (most efficient) way to cycle a tank?

Would it be possible to put in a couple Cherry Shrimp would they help or not? Or Pigmy Corys? or do these produce unnecessary waste? Should an airstone be used too? Ok last question (sorry) what sort of filter should i use so they fry do get sucked up?

Cheers

A spawning mop may work but is something I haven't tried with mine. I use a clump of java moss and have the results that I posted earlier. If I could move mine every month instead of every two months, I would do so.

I havent put fish in there and im not reallu a newbie :grr: im cycling the tank this weekend and putting fish in it in 4-6 weeks so ive got time to see what i can use and how many i can put in there
