Hi all I've been keeping fish for quite a few years, and my good friend has just caught the bug.

We have both acquired 16 litre aquariums with t5 lighting (blue & white), trickle filters & 25 watt heaters.

Both of us are going for planted tanks.

I'm using white silica and he has black sand...

From here we should take two completely different directions and end up with tanks that reflect our own personalities.

Here are a fews pics of mine starting off.... Comments welcome! will update as we progress.

Great start to an interesting topic :) ill be doing somthing very similar in the new year. Keep those pictures coming! and any idea on stocking? both plants and fish (if you intend to keep fish that is :p).

going for mainly mosses and ferns planting wise, with some floating plants as well (If I can find and effective mwthod of curtailing them to one corner of the tank!).

Stocking wise, I know its pretty limited size wise, but I'm letting the mrs choose (from a limited selection) as due to an unfortunate misidentification of my now very large bumble bee cat, she lost 2 honey guoramis..... Which is probably best because I would just stock with pygmy cories!

Thanks, and more phots will follow! just deciding the best way to stack the filter (it comes just with floss, but I prefer ceramic media and sponge.....

The only thing I worry about is sand getting into the filter.....

Sounds alright, planning on any co2 or fertz?

Gonna use regular ferts, but will probably leave CO2 for now, as I usually use it, but want to see how the plants do without it in good light and nutrients.

Oh another thing, I have Malaysian trumpet snails in all my other tanks, would they be useful in such a small tank?

They couldn't hurt... unless they begin to breed out of control

thanks and thanks!

I've turned it on now :p the light box in the hood is cool you can have just blue light or blue/white combo, in a big tank it would look really cold, but in this small one its a nice effect I think
