im sorry to tell you this but your arius jordani needs brackish and then full salt water as it grows adn wont survive its whole life in fresh

Echoing the above post if you want to keep that shark cat you are going to need another tank, once over about 6 inches shark cats NEED salt in their water and the ammount increases as they grow. My 8inch shark cat is in water half way to being full sea water.

are you serious?!!?!?!?!!!! that silver shark guy needs to transfer to salt water... okay im lost :D some one fill me in ... and the real name of the fish plzzz. but ya my pictus catfish is fine right?

Yes we are deadly serious. The scientific name of your shark cat is Hexanematichthys seemani, formly known as Arius seemani. These as with all Ariidae catfishes are sea dwelling catfish which only enter freshwaters to breed, the young fish then stay in freshwaters for a few months while they grow before heading down stream to join there parents in the sea where they stay until they become sexually mature and migrate back to freshwater to spawn. Your shark catfish will gradually become stressed and ill if it is kept in freshwater before finally dying from the lack of salt.

Pictus catfish are on the other end of the scale, being Pimeloid catfishes they dont tollerate any ammount of salt well and cannot be kept in salted water. If you intend to keep both fish then you will need two seperate tanks.

CFC is completely right, I should know!
I bough 2 of those little buggers and they died cause I did not get enough time to transfer them into saltwater!

If you cannot tranfer them into a brakish then full marine tank, take them back!

And they do get rather large :)

That gravel can't be doing them any favours either! ;)

Listen to what CFC has to say, he knows exactly what he's on about. DO NOT put the fish's health at risk just because you want to keep it and aren't prepared to spend the money on another tank. If it's too much then find a GOOD fish shop that knows what to do with it. Make sure they have brackish tanks on display aswell as marine fish.
