Hi, woke up this morning to find two dead rainbow fish amung some plants(not nice, they were my first tropical fish). I don't understand how they died because they were swimming around fine last night. Does this mean some kind of disease that might kill off my other fish too? Any help with be appreshiated :)

Tank size: 40x26
pH: 7.5ish
nitrite: <0.3
tank temp: 25-26°C

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 20% every fortnight (seems to work fine)

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: None

Tank inhabitants: 1 Silverback Shark, 1 rather large Tinfoil Barb, 2 Dwaft Gouramis, 5 Tiger Barbs, 3 Small catfish & 5 neon tetras but they went missing a few days ago and i have no idea where they went

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): Just replanting of uprooted plants

Exposure to chemicals: None

Food: Twice a day - Mostly flakes but sometimes a few Daphias

Either the shark, depending on the breed it is or the tinfoil barbs may have eaten the neons. Even though the tinfoil barb is herbivoris, it may try to eat small fish.

Do you have water parameters for you nitrate and ammonia too?
Have you sprayed any chemicals near the tank lately?
Do you see any fish swimming around erratically or oddly?
Did you see anything physically differently wrong with them compared to the other fish?

That possibly might be the explination.. The Tinfoil barb has always had a thing for the rainbows since day one of having it.

Do you have water parameters for you nitrate and ammonia too? water test kits for nitrate and ammoinia? the aqarium shop only recomended the no2 & pH tester kits.
Have you sprayed any chemicals near the tank lately? no chemicals
Do you see any fish swimming around erratically or oddly? They look great although the Tinfoil barb seems to have a slight injury in its fin.
Did you see anything physically differently wrong with them compared to the other fish? Didnt take a good look tbh :|

I'm pretty sure it was the barb now so whats the best thing to do with it? parents suggested asking a aqarium shop if they'll take it..

Thanks for the help so far

Seems to me then that the tinfoil barb may be the aggressive one in the tank.
Yes asking a pet shop/aquarium shop to take the tinfoil barb would be a good idea. Usually most stores do. Post back on here though if they will not take it because usually there is someone else on this forum who may be able to give him a new home.

I would also recomend buying a nitrate test kit, and ammonia test kit. As with further problems in your tank this may be useful. You may not have to buy one now, but next time you have a problem you may want to. As nitrate and ammonia are also critical to a tanks life and the life of fish in it.
