Case 1: My Apollo is acting abnormally. He's sinking to the bottom of the tank and sits on the ground or on a plant. Along with that, he's got a case of finrot. I pulled him out of the 5gal home he's accustomed to and put him a 1gal tank that's cycled and acts as our hospital tank. I've calculated how much meds to put in and am currently treating him w/ Maracyn2 since I've had extremely good luck with this product for finrot in the past. He stopped eating a few days ago, but started eating again after a few days of medicating. All water parameters are fine: no nitrites, ammonia, ph is at 7 - give or take a 0.1, and nitrates are extremely low. His finrot is receding, but he's still just sinking to the bottom of the tank and sits on the gravel. Also, I thought it was constipation at one point since his stomach was a little swollen (not to mention I thought maybe there was a chance that he had dropsy - no pine coning though) and fed him a pea - he didn't eat much, but some nonetheless. Any ideas as to what I else I can do for him? I feel so helpless since he's our favorite and most sociable fish.

Case 2: My other betta Tzar Bomba isn't doing well either. He's in a 5 gallon tank w/ some cories and an oto that's heavily planted. All water parameters are similar to what was mentioned above, slightly higher nitrate level though. Anyway, he's acting normal and eating normal, but he's got these spots on his head area where it looks like he's missing scales or something similar. I noticed that more spots appeared the day after I initially noticed the first spots. I can't tell if the spots are red or what color they are actually because his body is red as well. The spots are a darker shade of red than his normal body color though. I didn't have all these problems until I got plants in my tanks and I'm seriously considering ripping those plants out and just sticking with silk plants. Any suggestions or ideas?

Why all of a sudden all these problems?! I'm extremely frustrated that it seems all my fish are dying or has some sort of illness.

First one can the fish maintain it's balance in the water, does the tummy look bloated, are there any scales sticking out like a pinecomb.

Case two you will need to treat with anti internal bacteria med, good luck.

Case 1: Yes, appears to look fine. As I mentioned previously, I can't see any sort of pine coning. I can't tell if he is swimming awkwardly, it just appears that he keeps sinking to the bottom and then just lies there. Sometimes he swims up for air and it appears that he's swimming there fine, just no energy. Yeah, I too thought he had dropsy, but I can't see any bloating, other than his normal tummy size. Plus, the days he didn't eat, I noticed his tummy slimmed down a bit as well. :dunno:

Case 2: Not that I don't believe you, but before I do any sort of medicating, what gave away the signs that says it's an internal bacteria? Just so I know in the future. ;)

I would treat both cases with anti internal bacteria med, usually red spots are a bacteria desease, buts it's up to you, also you could add some salt to both tanks.

I did add the salt and am treating w/ Maracyn2 (anti bacterial med) for case 1. I checked Case 2 last night and the spots haven't gotten any more pronounced nor any more spots, but I'm going to keep an eye out. Thanks for the advice ;)

Hi there. Sounds like you are having a bit of a problem, but I'll add my 2 cents, whether it will help or not  If your first case has been having finrot, and his normal behavior is slowed down and you don't see any other visual signs, it could be a bacterial infection that fish sometimes catch after having injuries, or fin rot. The Maracyn2 should take care of that if that is what it is. I used the same product on my fish with great results too, even when I couldn't diagnose the problem.

Case 2, could be a bacterial infection or Septicemia, an internal infection. Take a look around at some links in the pinned section for betta health, and this one is good to take a look at too.

Good luck with your babies.

Thanks a lot, I don't see any streaking though. :dunno:

I'll treat them both with the Maracyn 2. I'll keep you guys updated!

Thanks for all your help!
