I scrapped the community tank idea and am going back to more aggressive fishes for the 37 after my heater breakage incident annihilating the 37's stock.

Right now all I've got is the female convict and a bunch of tiger barbs (which will increase in number after another batch gets out of quarantine) And I was wondering if I would be able to add another 5-6 inch cichlid species to this tank.

The footprint is unfortunately a mere 30 inches by 12 inches, but it's got a good 2 feet of height on it.

Being particular here, I was thinking of getting a firemouth of equal size to the convict. I don't want to get a male convict, because I don't really wanna have the big responsibility of rehoming a bunch of little baby monsters.

I'm also a bit of a soft heart towards fish fry that I watched grow, even if it's just a little bit, so I would feel awful if I used them as big-fish treats or simply flushed them. I also don't want them to go on murderous rampage and kill my barbs while they breed. That would be bad.

In the past I had issues in my larger tank with my firemouth and convict, but the firemouth was twice the size, so he kinda had an edge in pushing her around.

The tank is far from bare boned, got quite a bit of tall plastic plants and a medium sized cave and large and medium drift wood ornament.

Back on topic, regardless. Would a firemouth and convict fare together in this tank? If so, is there anything else I could throw in there to minimize aggression as much as possible? Thanks much.

I would advise against it personally. I love firemouths, i really do... But to add one in with a Con, all be it a female i would say you would get alot of aggression/bullying eventually. :/

yeah, I thought so. Just thought it would be worth asking. Thanks, though!

Straying a tad off topic, how much tiger barbs do you think I could fit in this with the convict? She doesn't seem to mind them much at this point in time, and I was able to go up to 15 of them in my old 29 with nothing else, but at the same time, I'm sure the convict will value her space without a huge load of tiger barbs out and about all the time

Unsure. Maybe try 10 and see what the tank looks like or if there is any aggression towards them?

10 sounds alot in a 37g, i was concerned about adding 12 to my 75g :S

A group of around 6 or 7 should be OK I don't think the Con would be to bothered by the group

Maybe 10 would be a little too many... I was purely thinking that 10 would be a good number so that aggression would be kept within the group. I had a group of 10 and there was never any trouble. Maybe look into another group of Barbs that stay a little smaller? :/

I'm a tad reluctant to try any other species of schoolers, I had a few tiger barbs which I moved from my 55 to it and it's the only thing she's gotten along with. I tried buenos aires tetras at first, but she did not like them one bit for some reason. But she doesn't even pay mind to the barbs.

I'm gonna aim for 8, seems like a good number. I'm not all too worried about aggression, the barbs have tried nipping at her before, but she nudged them off pretty quick, and they haven't bugged her since.
