i think what cometcastle was trying to ask was what (if any) planting subtrate will you use? just about everyone with live plants has a portion (or all) or their subtrate a special plant subtrare such as eco-complete, flourite, laterite, ect ect. Maybe people that have a top layer of sand have a base layer of laterite that cannot be seen. Dont take my word on it but i think its one ounce of laterite to every 1 gallon of water. Try the liveaquaria.com live plant care and click on subtratres, this should help you out a lot.

All the plants should be fine without co2. They may grow faster, however, if injected.

Ok I found the substrate for plants on that site, but which kind should I get? Its only a 2.5 gallon and I already have sand in it.

If you are trying to get new substrate solely for the plants you have mentioned then dont bother. Java moss/fern should not be planted in the substrate and hornwort is naturally a floating plant that can be planted in the substrate if you wish. Its hardy and probably would be fine in any substrate anyway.

i saw u have a couple of rams in your 29g. Are they hard to take care of becuz i have a 20g and i sorta want one but i dont know the skill lvl??
