2.5 Gallon Betta Tank, New But Old

Well I'm not going to worry about it, I'l just leave the light on when my dad's not home and at work, works a lot better and then I won't have to waste any money. Thanks for the help everybody, I think it's all set, even have some live plants in there now and if my lfs will get something that's aquatic maybe I'll get some more, chances of that though, very slim. Just anarchis, hornwort, and loads of non aquatic plants, Yuck.

O I wish I could show you guys pictures but my dad still hasn't gotten a digital camera yet, he's considering it though, otherwise I would have had pictures already. Sad news, I woke up this morning and he wasn't looking good at all, went to summer gym so I can have an extra study hall and I come back and he's dead. Tested the water, bad. Ammonia:.5, Nitrites:.5, nitrates:0. They went crazy really fast, just a few days ago they were fine, and I didn't do any major water changes to spike it either. Plants are doing great, growing like crazy, water is crystal clear, doesn't smell at all. I'm thinking that he stressed himself out since he wouldn't stop flaring and then when the levels went haywire he died from it?? I don't know. I think I'm going to get the levels back to normal let it sit for a little bit then get another betta from another store besides Petsupermarket, never will I support them again. When I last went there a goldfish was eating another dead goldfish who's eye was already rotted out, and the employees were just joking around and verbally abusing the birds, they may be worthy to support some places but abusing the animals is not worthy to me. I only wish I didn't have to get a betta from a store but my parents won't let me get one in the mail.

Well I got the ammonia down to 0 but nitrites are now at 5. I'm not adding a betta until they are down.

I'd like to not use chemicals as they cost money and my parents say I have to pay for my tanks by myself and I'm in to rush to get a betta so I'll try more to lower them with water changes. If that fails then I'll try that thanks.

Update: I got a gold mystery snail and a crypt for the tank tonight.

Ya but won't they go down eventually if you keep doing daily water changes?
I don't know where you heard that... the stuff that damages your betta is already in the tapwater. Chlorine and chloramine. You need water treatment or some sort of water that isn't treated with chlorine. Bottled water often works. But never use distilled water.

O you mean it's chorline that makes nitrites high? If that's so then my nitrites are probably fine because I forgot to put in de chorinator since there were no fish in it.

No no... I don't know anything about that.

Chlorine directly harms fish. You need dechlorinator. Fish can't live in chlorine or chloramine.
