Well since I sold one of my tarantulas I've migrated my betta into a plain glass 2.5g aquarium. Since it's lookin pretty sparse in there right now i'm thinking of doing the following:

Java moss as a carpet, and possibly a java fern or someting similar in one corner for the betta to chill in.

Add some small crusteceans such as ghost shrimp (what else would work well in a tank that small?)

Possibly a snail or an otocinclus for algae duty.

Comments? My only concern is keeping the java moss trimmed, was wondering if there's a small critter that would graze on it, but I cant think of any..

2.5 is way small for a oto

Yeah too small for an otto but i'd think ghost shrimp would work well. If you can find some Amano shrimp they'll devour any algae that appears.

I remeber reading about a certain method for creating a Java Moss carpet using some mesh wire. I think you sandwich the jave moss between two pieces of mess wire and eventually the moss grows into little spikes creating a perfect grassy carpet.

You'll need to maintain the 'lawn' look by regular cutting but on a tank that small that shouldnt take too long. Say 2minutes every week or so.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Paul.

hey gota filter for less matience?

hmm you could add mabey a female betta or 2 that r different clor then the mate that would look cool not mugh u can do with a 2.5 gal tho

I'd need a heater for amano shrimp wouldn't I? I thought i recalled reading that they needed warm warm water...

I read that amano shrimp should be kept in tanks no smaller than 10 gallons.

only betta I'm afrid too small for any other fish.

You CAN NOT house male bettas with female bettas. They will fight. That is why breeders take extra care when spawning them. Its very risky.
You wouldn't be able to house 2 females in that small of tank, as you usually need atleast 3-4 females and the minimum tank size is 10 gallons.
Stick with just the betta and some shrimp, the betta may eat the shrimp though. Also, snails produce to much waste to be in a 2.5 gallon.

I had wondered about the betta taking potshots at the shrimp, but I was thinking with a java moss carpet there'd be enough shelter for all parties involved to get away from each other..

you can too house them i have plenty of time as long as it is not 2 males especialy in a 2.5 gallon the betta will love it especialysince they r use to small areas

Again, no, you cannot house a male and 2 females in a 2.5 gallon tank. That is WAYYYY to small. Some people have tried it in large tanks, but I don't know of anybody thats done it succesfully.
Anyway, its Malkavian's decision but I'm sure he's got the brains to figure out that a "betta community" in his 2.5 gallon won't work out...

I think I'll just go with the betta + java fern + ghost shrimp if everyone thinks that'll suffice as far as keeping the tank somewhhat clean
