That's extremely irresponsible to give out advice like that. It's great that it worked for you, but more often than not it doesn't work -- especially in a 2.5 gallon tank. Every betta has an extremely different personality and can be very unpredictable. Extreme caution should be taken when putting a female betta community together (some females are much more aggressive than others), and you should never keep a male with other males OR other females... it might work for a while, but you're asking for trouble. Better safe than sorry.

Even shrimp with bettas are risky. As with all fish, bettas have different temperments. Some bettas may even attack the shrimp. I added an amano to one of my 2.5 gallons and 2 days later it was dead. Don't know if the betta did it or if it just died. The other 5 I bought the same day and put in my 29 gallon are still alive and doing fine. For a 2.5 gallon, I would just stick with some plants and the male betta.

I'd go with some ghost shrimp (about 2-3, maybe) and an ADF as tankmates, personally. Even if they get along at the beginning, there's a chance the betta will snack on the shrimp when they shed their exoskeletons, but at the price of ghost shrimp you can afford to lose one on occasion :)

i under stand what you mean by being safe then sorry but the thing is i work in the lab at my collage where we studdied betta and there behavior eating plans compatibility with other fish now you cannot house a male betta with anything but its self as most of you think well that was put to the test ( no animals were harmed) we simply put many different male betta with many different species in many different size tanks. including many 2.5 all checked negative except the female bettas. if you have a female in with the male it will simple live peacefully/ b/c this would be just like living in the wild for them when the male come into their "territory" thy go into attack mode to defend the area. but if a female were to g into there territory the male would think nothing but a potental mate.

it took me a while to read though

Wow the things i start  Don't worry I'm not about to try to put bettas together in a tank this small. First order of business is getting the java moss, where's the best place to get plants from?

One or even two semesters of playing with bettas' living conditions is hardly predictive and you shouln't pass it off as such.
eta:people who have been keeping fish for decades would disagree and that should not be discounted.

My LFS is a Petsmart sadly :( They have some fantastic plants from time to time but no java moss from what I've noticed
