Well today a new era started, today I finally bit the bullet and decided to buy a new... Brand New aquarium. Mine has been leaking for some while and I've also just re-designed and decorate my bedroom so thought i'd sort the tank whilst I was at it.

My Old tank Measured 50 x 25 x 32cm with Built in light and filter. It's been part of the family for the best part of 20 years so it is time it went to the tip.

On this picture you can see the low water level due to the leaking and moving the tank whilst i decorate

So the new tank, well its made by a bloke at my LFS (Dave's Aquarium/BAS, Bolton) It came with quite a nice hood too which fits T8 bulbs and Isn't flimsy like the clearseal ones. It is slightly bigger measuring 60x30x37cm giving it a volume of 15G.

Plans for this tank...
Black substrate, black back ground
Anubias and Swords
Java Moss
Bog Wood
York Stone pieces

Would love it too look similar to this

Current Stock of Old tank:
11 Mosquito Rasbora
2 Ottos
numerous RCS

Nice new tank, do keep us updated with pics and how you get on as you progress, getting a tank like these two pics will be no mean feat but certainly worth a go.

Neat new tank.. :)

Cant wait for the progress and more pics!

The first scape will be easier to replicate I think..

All the best!

Quick and simple update, today I went out and bought the following bits

  • new in tank thermometer
  • 1.5m of air line
  • some conditioner
  • Jewel High-Lite colour T8
  • Jewel Bulb reflector
  • Black substrate, sandy but not as small in size

Will look good once cleared up and a few more plants might help too.

The 3d background i since, but do be aware it does take up some space in the tank, therefore potentially less stocking due to space.

Well done indeed.

Do another water change to get the water clearer faster.
Nice tank overall.

Still not all cloudy-ness has dissapeared but most has gone,

I will change the water tomorrow and try to get the shrimp in tomorrow also. They are currently cleaning thick black algae from my anubias. Will be attaching them to rock tomorrow using super glue.

I think minimal plants are the way forward for now as i like the clarity and hoping that the tetras will look good in there.

Is there an easy to care for short grass i could buy?

If you want to achieve something like in the pictures you're probably going to have to go high tech and carpet. I would also change the bulb, it has a weird purple tint to it.

Are these T8 bulbs?

If so, could be one of the lower wattage ones, like 10 watts ones from APS for example do have a pink hue to them which apparently is for plant growth.

But since you have very low light plants, Java Fern and Java Moss, and possibly anubias, it is not essential at this time to go for a higher wattage bulb, however, if you want to grow more plants, might be an idea to change to a higher wattage one with more daylight colour when this bulb goes eventually.

Not easy to grow carpet plants or hair grasses with low light and low tech set-up am afraid.

And one suggestion, I'd put in a background poster, perhaps plain black as that may bring out the green of the plants a bit more as well as whichever potential stocking you choose to help their colours stands out a bit more against a black background, just a suggestion.

And lastly if you are superglueing anubias to rock or wood, be sure to use glue that contains just cyanoacrylate. That will be safe to use for aquariums, Just in case you were unaware of that.

Tank looking good though

Damn it! Just checked my super glue, it contains cyanoacrylate but doesnt give the ingredients, should i remove it?

Well a massive update today, woke up early and went to B&Q 2 hours later we have...

A nice new fish tank table, which will be stained with oak varnish when i get time.

Picked up 15 Cardinals whilst BAS is round the corner from B&Q, also got a heater as my old one was broken and the one from other tank was cut into the wiring box.

so here it is...

I'm already want one other fish, something bright!

Maybe someone could suggest something (I know it would be over stocked but 1 more can't be damaging can it?)

What i mean is that superglue should only contain cyanoacrylate, nothing else really.

So if your tube/bottle of superglue just says cyanoacrylate and thats it, nothing else, then should be fine to use.

Looks nice. The tint of the bulb still looks odd to me though.

Looking good! Nice wooden stand! Suits the look of the tank you got there!
