I was gonna say betta - then saw the bottom of the message! How come you don't like bettas???

Maybe you could get some african dwarf frogs

bettas are rare here and there is a current in the tank

its 40cm high and about 45cm wide and long

not alot will suit it really

was thinking one or 2 fish

I've just got some Killifish! I have 4 and they are in a tank a lot smaller than yours...

The colours on Killifish are amazing and there are so many species of them!

If it wasn't a hex, I would have suggested shell-dwelling cichlids Oh well...

Are you set on going for only 1 or 2 individual fish (perhaps a trio of sparkling gouramies, some shrimp, and heavily plant...)?

You could set up a cute little community:

1 male honey gourami (colisa chuna/sota)
3 pygmy cories (make sure they are pygmies - the tank's way too small for normal-sized cories)
5 spotted rasboras
4 male endler's livebearer

That's my suggestion anyway
