I recently came across a 10g hood. I Re-painted the inside white with spray paint, recovered reflectors with foil to make it reflect better Since aluminum reflectors were dull. I also changed out the incandescent bulbs with 26w daylight cfl's giving what should be 52watts. Only issue i am concerned about is the cfl's slightly touch the rear of the reflector. If i remove the reflectors it fits perfect. But i dont know if the plastic hood can withstand the heat. Anyone run hoods with out reflectors? And or does it matter if the bulb touches?

Update* been a month or so since i have had the lights running. Left them with the reflector plates on and i leave on about 10hrs a day and its still up and running fine. Plants are doing alot better than with out it. I also cut a piece of acrylic for the top to sit on the heat did make it sag a bit but it helps with evaporation and keeps the hood dry. Also gives the tank a better visual look.
