What RO system are you running, all the ones i looked into needed a constant flow of water through the membrane or they became useless? In the end i decided my tap water was plenty good enough for my community tank.

Sort of true. Ive spoke at length about these systems with Russ@Buckeyefieldsupply.com. He explained that the "running water through the membrane is a rumor" that stemmed from the requirement to store the membrane in water to keep it from "going bad". It does need water on it for long term storage, but it does not need running water.

thats not the advice i got from RO Man when i enquired

The membrane needs to remain wet, it doesn't have to have water continually running through it.
