So I face a fully cyclesd ten gallon tank and was wondering if this set up would work.

2 german blue rams(preferably one of each sex)
3 honey or dwarf gourami(questions on sex ratio later)
6 school of small tetra or rasbora (possibly neon, black skirt, black phantom or maybe harlequins)

Okay so now my question on honey and dwarf gouramis, so the other day I was at walmart and looked in their gourami tank and saw they had two definate females one I knew was a dwarf femaleand the other kind of looked like it might have been a flame dwarf female. So I guess I'm asking a few things, first can some one post pictures of all of the color vairiants female? Would it be better to get three males from a more reliable sorce or get two females from like walmart and a male from a better place? Does it matter if they aren't all the same color variant? Could I have a female and male in the tank while searching for another female?

And for the tetras which kind of tetra would you suggest? From the listed or not either is fine

Sorry for all the questions... But any informatioon that is provided I'd great! Thank you!!!

I would go from the rams or the honey gourami. Rams need to be kept at 28C which is higher than most other fish. If you want rams i would go for something like
2 Rams
6 rummy nose tetra
6 hatchets

or if you want honey gourami i would go for
2 honey gourami
6 neons
6 panda corys or 8 pygmy corys.

black skirt and black phantom get to big for a 10g

Hi I would choose between the rams and the gourami a few reasons, the rams need higher temperatures than the gourami and its quite important for long term health of the fish. I also think a 10g would be a bit cramped for 2 rams and 3 gourami and you might get issues while gourami are top dwellers and rams are lower dwellers in a 10g tank its not really a lot of height realisitcally so they could clash.

I think depending on which of those two you choose would dictate the tetra you go for if you go with the rams and the higher temperature tank go for rummy nose tetras as they do best in those kind of temperatures up at 28c. If you go for the gourami go for any of the torpedo shaped tetras but try and stay small like green neons or platinums there are a few other species but dont get disk tetras like the skirts they get too big.

#41#### it this keeps happening to me tonight haha but yeah agree with Kinzo either of those stocks look good to me :good:

10 Gallons isn't big enough for a pair of rams, so stick to gourami's or small Apistogramma species, that is if you're still interested in small SA cichlids.

Why rams and apisto are about the same size and aggression and both IME do fine in a 10G

Rams are from the Mikrogeophagus genus which translates to: mini-earth eater and feed from the bottom, for a pair 2 square feet is needed, the female will dominate most of that space should they breed.

Apistogramma's on the other hand are slightly smaller and are less aggressive when breeding and certain species such as cacatoides and agassizii make great tank mates for a 10 gallon set up, that is presuming you want little other stock.

But agassizi are one of the biggest and most aggressive apisto there are. IMO i think rams will do fine in a 10G aslong as the water conditions are right.

Have you ever heard of the 20 gallon per pair guide, by all means it is only a guide, but 10 US gallons is a very small body of water, particularly for rams.

Okay I'm just confused right now... So is it okay to gave rams in a ten or not? Just so I know what my possibilities are.
If I can have rams how does this stocking look?
2 rams
5-6 cherry barbs
5-6 harlequin rasbora

Then I get the rams and I've been researching harlequins for awhile and like them and today was looking at a middle dweller that I could have and found cherry barbs and love them!!!! I will also be covering all levels of the tank.

Personally I think rams are fine in a 10 and cant see why apistos would be okay but rams not so. But as said the rams need higher temperatures around 28c where as most other comm fish need 24-26 and these barbs and rasbora will need 24c and wont do well at 28c long term.

Looks like all of the dwarf Cichlid folk have gone from around here, as above 28oC is the minimum for M.ramirezi with 30 being preferred, and to the OP, if aggression becomes a problem due to the lack of space, don't say I didn't warn you, that is if you go ahead, 10 gallons would be fine for a pair...providing they were on their own, also a sand substrate is advisable with them being earth eaters.

hi sorry didnt mean to tread on any toes, I have to admit only kept a hand full of dwarfs (mainly various apistos) and didnt think there was that much difference between blue rams and apistos? To the OP since I have not kept rams in a 10g before I would take Stigs advice over mine :)

That said though you could consider some of the other dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma Nijsens (Spelling) they stay quite small and the males and females are quite different from each other and look really nice in their own respects the males are a strong metalic blue with red finnage and females are yellow with black panda markings :)

Well the reason that I've never considered apistos is because I don't think that my lfs have any. But I will check into it and research them and then i will decide.
While I do that, which other tetras, rasbora, barbs, etc. would be suitable to my tank size and the temps that water will be at?

Just finished calling around to see if apisto were even a possibility and they kind of are, as I am still in my mid teen years(but still very into the hobby, Ive had fish since I was like 8ish sounds young but when my parents had gotten divorced and my dad left them for me :) I always research well obviously I'm on here lol and want the best for these awesome creatures!!!) and not to be or sound frugal but holy cow they are spendy fish! At $9 each being the least which were apisto norberti and all the others like gold agassizi, hongsloi, umbrella were $13each..
And then there was one someone called tiger.. Is that the same as agassizi? And on they spelled as like chatzupdis, what do you think they ment? Mowi must debate between apistos an rams.... Suggestions from the species provided including gbr?

I would go for apisto i like them more but its upto which one you like more. There about £14 a pair here. The best ones ive owned are agassizii but for your tank i think hongsloi would work well.
