10 Gallon Tank

Hi folks, my girlfriend has got a 10 Gallon tank and would like to keep tropical fish. Could you suggest a couple attractive but small fish to keep besides Neon Tetra?

plain and simply:
guppies
but keep a cycled 5g on hand (birth tank for fry)

Yes it would be fine, you could keep a few cories and Rasboras with it also.

I wouldn't keep the Betta with the Guppies though!

You might also want to look at a couple of Platties if you don't fancy Guppies. I know they're quite common but I think they're lovely. Nice shape and loads of colours!

if you do keep a betta, your options will be pretty limited in terms of tankmates. colorful fish generally wont work with bettas but there are some options that are still interesting.


5 or 6 glass catfish would work, they arent colorful but theyre definitely an eyecatcher because you can see right through em unlike most catfish, they swim mainly in the mid to top levels of the tank.

someone else mentioned rasboras. im not 100% on that but i'll take their word for it

corydoras or ghost shrimp would work too, but i dont know how 'attractive' they are.

african dwarf frogs work too.

all of these fish are commonly available so finding them in a pet store shouldnt be a challenge. good luck.

I think these suggestions are good except the glass catfish. I believe they need a much larger tank

Nooooooooooo! the betta will chase the life out of the guppies.

I've tried many friends with bettas and found the bigger the tank the easier they get on. However the best mixture so far has been and is our current setting. Which is 1 betta, some cory's and some kuhli loach. You really need to lose the guppies as betta's don't take too well to them at all.

Our 10 gallon was a guppy tank previously. When I removed them all to make it a nice place for the betta I managed to miss a few fry and a big one (it's heavily planted). The betta chased them constantly and there was no sign of any of them within 2 days.

Wouldn't be surprised if the cardinals suffered the same fate.

This is a female betta I'm referring to as well, males are far more bad tempered.

cardinal tetras are beautiful but theyre not very hardy at all. theyre pretty hard to acclimate, and assuming your girlfriend is a beginner, the cardinals will probably die off in a matter of a couple weeks unfortunately.
