I've recently been given a 10gal aquarium from someone who is no longer interested in keeping fish. In other words, is no longer interested in caring for pets that her son ignores. Anyway, after cleaning everything up and slowly getting the water parameters in check I now have to come up with a game plan for the current inhabitants - two peppered cories. Does anyone think it would be okay if I kept it a cories only tank and got them a few new friends to play with? Or, would the best option be for me to find them a new home?

Thanks for the help.

10 gals IMO is too small for any cories apart from pygmys, corys do better with at least 6 of the same species for them to be happy...

Personally you'd be better off either getting a bigger tank or re-homing the peppers and getting some small fish for the 10 gals. :)

Thanks Harlequins.

I love your idea of getting another tank for the cories AND keeping the 10 gallon. Not sure that this will go over well with the boyfriend, though.

Everyone here rants about how much they love cories so I was excited about the possibility of keeping these little guys. But, if you think it's best to give them a new home if I can't provide a better one then I guess I'll have to do that. Oh well, maybe in the future.

If the boyfriend is the problem I think a few of us ladies in here can come together and share some tricks on how to sneak up a tank on them without too much of a fuzz ;D

I just set the tank up and ignore my boyfriends disapproval. :D

Hey, if I let him mod my TV with his xbox and loud games and blahblahblah then I'm going to setup my tanks!! :hey:

Hi chrysalid :)

I don't understand why the members posted several negative comments about keeping corys in a 10 gallon tank. Perhaps the PETA people have been lurking around. :S

A ten gallon is an excellent size tank for a small, single species, cory community. I have 7 bronze C. aeneus (and two killies) in one, 8 C. trilineatus in another, an actively breeding colony of 9 C. pandas in another, an unidentified breeding group of something else in another. I also have groups of black C. schultzei, C. weitzmani, albino C. aeneus, C. sterbai, C. zygatus, and others, all in their individual 10 gallon tanks.

Thanks for the encouragement, Inchworm.

I don't think that the others are saying that it can't be done, just that it probably isn't best if it is. The others are just being cautious. They don't know how diligent of a fish keeper I am or what the complete set-up is. They are looking out for the best interest of the fish and I applaud them for that.

I still haven't made up my mind as to what I'm going to do. (Can anyone else hear that voice whispering - sounds like "new tank, new tank") They're settled for now and doing well so I have some time to ponder.

I always hear that voice inside my head. Unfortunately, my wife is a louder voice saying, "NO." :D

I was able to get the biggest tank to start with though, so that helps. My wife is starting to come around on the fish now, so there is hope that I could get a 2nd or even a 3rd in a few years... We'll have to see.

What type of killies and how does this work for you if I may ask? Egg predation either way?

(I'm inching toward some cory/killie arrangements ... seems to be sensible and saves space over the current 10g's for cories, 5g for killies... any first hand comments would be nice.)
