Hey guys,i just bought a fish tank today and started cycling it :) (yay me!) but now im thinking what i should put in it. I want a male betta, some neon tetras (or glofish, still debating on that) and corydoras,it'll still be some time till i finish cycling but im excited like woah so i wanna plan my fish already. Anyway,i was thinking to stock it with:

1 Male Betta
10 Neon Tetras (or glofish as i said)
4 Corydoras (i'm not sure what specific species they have at our lfs,but they were extremely tiny,as big as a neon tetra)

would this be too much? 15 fishes all in all,i will add plants, but im not exactly that keen into making it a forest, just a few plants so they have hiding places and whatnot,i'd appreciate any replies :)

(and if some of you saw my older thread about a soriority,i scrap that idea,as much as i want to,i dont want to risk getting an agressive female that'll kill everyone else or such, its a bit exaggerated but id rather keep it safe with a male betta :) and yes,he will be the King or Jewel or whatever you call it in this tank)

well for betta tank mates it is usually recommended that you avoid tetras, esp neons because they are notorious fin biters and long flowing fins like a bettas usually end up being irresistible.

just my two cents, I speak from personal experience.

I'd avoid glofish as glofish are zebra danios which are super active fish. This causes 2 problems, they're too active for any 10gal in my opinion. But also super active tank mates often aren't good with male bettas cause they can often find them irritating.

However as Jenste said, neons are hit and miss. Some can be fine, some can be fin nippers.

Also not all male bettas will tolerate other fish in their tank, particularly when they're in the same water level as the betta. Corys often work well as they occupy the bottom levels.
So I'd definitely buy the corys before trying the neons, that way you'll see if your betta is happy to tolerate tank mates.

Also stick to the smaller corys, 5cm or less. So avoid bronze, albinos and peppers. :)

and definitely avoid emerald cories! they grow HUGE

I did have neon tetra's in with my betta. They were fine, but I eventually got my betta his own tank because I wanted him next to the sofa lol.

But I hav seen Tetra's nipping betta before, so maybe I got lucky. Your fish, your choice.

which would be a safer bet for my betta? glofish or neons? and yes i will get small corys no matter what as i find the small ones really cute :D

well as other users were trying to say - - glofish need a bigger tank than yours and neons are a risk.

so I would definitely NOT get glofish and would really debate over the neons because they might tear up your bettas fins.

well if what you guys are trying to say is no to both (i take the "its a risk" as a  ) then what could you suggest me? i just want sumthin to fill up the tank and not make it feel too empty, preferably middle to top areas since the corydoras take the bottom already :D

maybe some harlequin rasbora? or galaxy rasbora? they are pretty and peaceful, and shouldnt be a "bad mix" with bettas (its up to the betta of course-but ive never had a problem with any betta in a community setting, just saying. or maybe ive gotten lucky even with the odds being high considering the # of boys and gals ive kept and always with tankmates).
if you want cories also, get small species. definitely do your research and know what type you are buying. ten gal is not an especially large volume of water, even if it seems to be.
cheers

IMOP you have four options...

1 x male betta
8 x Corydoras

1 x male betta
6 x ???? (small schooling fish)

1x male betta
5 x African DWARF (not clawed) frogs.

1 x male betta
6 x ????
4 x Corydoras

There's many more options, but that's what I would do. Why not look at these, and let us know what you want, then we can build from there :good:

Zophie

well yes i guess the set up should be sumthin like that Zophie, however i dont want to go with the 8 corydora choice (or sumthin similar) as i think the bottom will be too crowded. We also dont have any adf or any frog or shrimp or snails or such in any lfs near us  as for the schooling fish, yes id like those, rasboras seem nice but i know little about them -_- more suggestions would be appreciated :D

oh and i found out what species of corys they sell at our lfs, they are panda corys, according to the lfs and the internet, those guys should be small enough to fit in my tank right? :D
