I really need some help Ive been breeding these guppies for nearly threee years and I would be heartbroken to loose them all. currently dying at the rate of around 4 a day

1. Water parameters. (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, PH, temp', Hardness etc)

Tested Saturday all fine

2. A full description of the fishes symptoms.

Fish healthy then in a few about 12 hours turn silver, fins have a shredded look and then die

3. How often you do water changes and how much.

1/3 rd of the tank every fortnight (144l tank)

4. Any chemicals and treatments you add to the water.

King british water safe when changing water

5. What tank mates are in the tank.

just guppies (4 adult and 30 fry) and one bristlenose cat

6. Tank size.

144L

7. Finally Have you recently added any new fish?

Started after adding 4 new guppies on Saturday afternoon

We really need you to give us water parameters, I know you have tested it and say it's fine but the numbers actually can help alot when trying to figure out what is going on.

It sounds like they deteriorate quite quickly from seeing the symptoms for the first time to them dying am I right?

Do the fish all eat normally? swim normally? appear to be a normal weight (do they lose weight despite feeding)? Does their poo have a clear or white stringy look to it?

what do you feed your fish?

what is it you mean by turning silver? does it happen from the back end up the body? do you have any pictures

to me it sounds like columnaris, look it up and see what you think?

I have never seen it in its early stages I check bafore work and by the time I'm back I have dead fish - its that quick...I sit 50 cm from the tank for hours every evening and they look fine. I come back and they are dead....

The first fish to die were the new ones (except for one which is still here )

I feed them on Tetra Pro colour and I'll run a water test in the next hour.....The tank hardly has anything in it anbd I'm convinced these new fish brought something with them .......

The symptoms are similar to columnaris but it doesnt look fungal - it literally looks like they have been painted silver or white

Thanks for the replies I'm gutted overe this

Hi,

Quick update

Water ph 7.2, Ammonia 0, Nitrate and Nitrite 0 - I have double checked these by getting the water tested at my Local Aquarists.

Symptoms do look like Columnaris and I'm currently treating with a high dose of eSHa 2000

This has made a difference by slowing the spread but not completley halting it yet

I have a few questions : -

1. will fish with symtoms have a chance of survival?
2. The treatement is for three days. As I have a serious case should I extend this to make sure?
3. Will this treatement eradicate this bacteria or?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris.... I tried and tried with several batches of Guppies before I could get them established by catching the fry of a newly bought female as and when they were born and transferring them to another tank....

This batch of saved fry eventually formed the core of my culture stock which I still have running today... many, many thousands. (all the parents also died in the first week)

I subsequently heard of what is termed as "guppy disease"....., which is prevalent in most Guppies coming from mass breeding farms.... (same as neon disease, if you've heard of it)....

All the fish obtained by the lfs from specific "Guppy" farms are carriers of this disease and has no symptoms other than the fish are dying....

I have not heard of a cure for this, and I (IMO) assume that the new fish you introduced were infected by this.. If at all possible,....

I suggest that you keep your fry seperate from the adults untill conditions in the main tank have stabilized..... I have no other suggestions.

Hi,

I've nowhere to put them.

Is there any light at the end of the tunnel here? I feel like I'm fightring a loosing battle

I have three adults left but a large number of fry - All fish left are feeding and none are currently showing symptoms

How long will it be before I know this has gone?
