Do I need plant specific substrate if I use liquid fertilizer?

I know a good amount about OUTDOOR gardening, but am learning about aqua-gardening. Since most of the readily available planted tank substrates either look too silly, come in too large a quantity, or cost a LOT, I'm curious if it MUST be used IF I am already adding a little liquid fertilizer to...

    Fertilizers and Water Changes

So I have a quick question. I have Seachem flourish and NilocG’s Thrive and I am testing both on different tanks. I am curious about water changes while using these products. So if I have a 20 gallon and I use 2 pumps of Thrive (it says 1 pump per 10Gal) or Flourish do I need to do weekly water...

Help! I Can't Get Anything to Grow

I have tried using root tabs (one per plant, at base of plant, replace every 4 months as per instructions) on my rooted plants and seachem flourish for my floaters and nothing seems to be working. My hornwort seems to shed needles until there is either nothing left or just a small part covered...

Fertilizer Problems / Green Spot Algae

This conversation originated from this thread, but I moved the discussion here since it's becoming more of an algae problem. Tank setup: eight danios, two amano shrimps, two bristlenose catfish, and one albino cory catfish 10-gallon tank water temperature: 24-26.5 degC (75-79.7 degF) currently...

    Struggling with plants.

I recently ordered some jungle Val. I knew it may take a while to adjust from being shipped, but it’s going very poorly. Was delivered September 28th. At first, I thought it wasn’t going to melt back or have too many problems, and it started sending runners. Now, everything is dying. The little...

New planted tank - what fertilisers/foods are shrimp safe?

Hi all, I am setting up a new 180l tank and am going for my first ever planted aquarium. I have laid out Prodibio AquaGrowth Soil on the base of the tank, and then a layer of Prodibio AquaShrimp Powder Soil which was recommended. I have purchased a selection of plants from my local aquarium...

    DIY ferts for planted tank?

It seems like such a waste to just keep buying and adding root tabs to my aquarium. Is there a cheaper option I can make myself, or else improve the ecosystem in the tank so the plants continue to get nutrients and grow? They aren’t doing much at the moment and are far from flourishing.

    Fertilizer questions

Hi, I have seachem flourish comprehensive but it looks like it has a bit of everything in nutriments but not a lot. I was wondering if it is better to get a all in one fertilizer kind of like the tropica one or easy green or to get more seachem product like potassium, iron, advanced... Also what...

    Is this plant substrate legit?

Found this nutrient soil at a really cheap prize but can't find any info on it online. Anyone knows if this is legit? I don't expect it to be as good as the more expensive brands, but if it's better than nothing.. I'm planning on placing it beneath the sand. This is what it says in the...

Please help me figure out my lighting, ferts and CO2!

I have a lot of trouble figuring out how much light and CO2 I have, and what plants would thrive in my tank. I could also use some help dosing ferts. My tank is about 120gallon or 540liters. I have 2 18w LEDs, (AquaEl) one at 10 000k and one at 6500k. I can't figure out what their PUR/PAR or...

What's Going On With This Plant (Pics)?

I've got four of these sword plants, they were doing fine when I first put them in the tank. But now new leaves grow in distorted (ravelled edges, small, orange/red tint on the edges). The existing leaves seems to be thriving but new growth looks weak?   I'm not sure if this had anything to do...

Planted Nano - Substrate Requirements? - Australian Sources?

Here we go, I'm thinking of setting up a planted nano tank approx 30L   - One betta will reside in this tank with maybe a couple of bristlenose plecos or shrimp if I can manage to source some decent species.   - I'm curious as to what kind of substrate I should use and where is it located.   -...
