As in all fish, you do get the exceptions, but they generally grow to about 5" and start breeding at 4"..... Males are particularly violent during mating, and you must expect to lose a coupla females... Keep a close watch and remove the female if she gets too battered....

Reading your heading again,...... could be that you want to know "How big - (a tank) - they need to breed"... In that case, I'd say nothing less than a 36" x 12" x 18".
