I was just wondering if there is like a rule of thumb for how many fish in a tank

The rule I have heard (and used) is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Of course it is not a strict rule; for instance my tank is a bit over stocked but small fish such as tetras get along pretty well and they are all happy. Another issue would be compatibility. As boredvlad23 mentioned, some fish need more space and have special needs, so maybe it's better to know what fish you want to add and then do some math while keeping in mind the traits and characteristics of your favorite fish.
