How many Bettas Does it take?

right now, i have 48 plus about 200+ 6 day old fry

i've got three....i'm debating on a fourth to go in my 5 gallon. the last 2 i tried puttin in there died. one of them was being attacked and got stressed out and died not long after i put him in. the second one seemed perfectly fine. then he started hiding more often, and next thing ya kno i find him dead! i'm scared to try another one!
