My cat fish's left gill appears to be always opened. It also appears to be inflamed inside.
Any ideas regarding the cause and possible remedies?

Hi Andrew.

Okay, In my own personal experience, the open gill thing going on is similar to the mouth being locked open. Maybe a piece of gravel/sand has got in there, and caused soreness. Remove the fish into a small container and have a closer look. There are one or two diseases that may cause it, but try to elliminate the obvious first

No sand/gravel. Thought of that right away.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Signs of gills and skin flukes are.
Red inflamed gills or pale gills with excess mucas.
Also the fish can be pale with excess slime on the body.
Flicking and rubbing.
Gasping at the suface or laboured breathing.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Sores on the body of the fish.
Spitting food out.
Sometimes weight loss.

It could be flukes but would expect labour breathing and some flicking.
Just need the poster to answer a few more question.
it could also be bacterial.

No labored breathing or flicking.
Just an extended gill with some redness inside. All other activities seem to be fine.
I have started a gill fluke treatment just in case.

Regarding bacteria, there has been a cloudy look to the aquarium for several weeks that I can't seem to fix. I've cleaned the filter, vacuumed the gravel, and partially changed the water, but no improvement has been noticed.

Any ideas?

I'm not totally convinced it gill flukes but you added the med now.
See how it goes.
Good luck.
