Male Guppies are actually cool, and there are some that are every bit as nice as some Bettas but without much of the attitude

Agreed! I'd keep the males and maybe get a couple more...and a snail or shrimp too!

Heater is needed; also you can up that water level a lot! I tell people this with low tanks like that all the time lol takes like a whole gallon out of ten out!
