I was wondering if anyone knew if Nandus Nandus prefer to be in small or large groups, or solitaire. I know they are fine alone, but would it help if there are more of them? As I've seen Ctenopoma acutirostre hunt in "packs" and wondered if Nandus Nandus will do the same.

Good question. I dont have any experience with this species, but I have kept some of its relatives at points in the past and presnt.
I would say it would be a loner, or be mildly teratorial like Pristolepis sp. . How big is your tank? I would probably go for only one or two, depeding on tank size.

I had a single for quite a time, then i decided to get 3 more, the behaviour didn't really change, apart from there was more competition for the food. they don't really appear to sit together particularly, just where ever there is most cover and leaves etc.
They are not territorial at all and never have issues with each other.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions i may be able to help with :)

I was also thinking they may be a bit territorial.
The tank for my Nandus is 38 gallons.

Thanks a lot. Actually I think I got lucky because my Nandus is always out in front of the glass. Sorta like a platy or guppy and doesn't hide when I approach the tank. He's my avatar (when I first got him and just fed him, and now he's a a lot more colored up) and I was thinking of getting a few more.

Out of curiosity, what did/do you feed yours?

thanks DarkEntity. According to your videos and everyone else it definitely appears they have no territorial issues. Also they're ok as solitaire or in groups.

Do you only feed your nandus live goldfish DarkEntity?

Thanks a lot everyone. ;)

Look at where both DE and the youtube videoer come from, one of from the USA, the other from Scotland. Guess which one feeds his fish on live food?

:X I automatically assumed both they were his. Well I'm not going to feed mine goldfish anyways. But I'd like to know what people feed theirs. :D

Na not mine, sorry should have stated.

Ive been after Nandus for ages, but just cant get them near me :/

They seem to be falling out of favor resently, ive only ever seen them once, and that was in a rubbish little store where someone had bought him in because he ate most of their fish!

Mine will only eat live food, so far I only feed them either worms or shrimps, however i know Jelly has got his onto frozen fish, mine are just not interested.

A shame really. Great little fish IMO.

Oh ok. I've got mine to eat frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and live ghost shrimp.
I'm not too sure if mine would eat anything live. It seems to rather check out the ghost shrimp rather than eat them.

What is this supposed to mean, I am american and I find it an insult. The nandus looks great alone of in a group. Is it alone in a tank or not?

I am pretty sure that it wasn't an insult. SB is just saying that DE couldn't possibly feed his fish goldfish if the tank is in America (making it obvious it wasn't his fish).
